Timing Belt Condition after 216k Miles...

I thought it was pretty well established that a 2000 is a non-interference engine.

What happens to the rest of the components in the vicinity when the belt lets go? Way more damage than the $40 for a new belt. As somebody else said, there are the t-stat, tensioners, other things that need to be checked, replaced. That's just basic $hit to check. The belts stretches, too.

Still interference engines and internal engine damage are a whole different level of scariness.

I was under the impression that the 2k LC 4.7 *is* an interference motor..

Wow, that made my head hurt! Horrible advice in that link but the end result (timing belt replaced & no internal damage) points to a non-interference design for non-VVTI engines.

So, changed out the Timing Belt today. Got the Aisin kit, 177$ on Amazon- same day shipping!

Glad I did the belt when I did, the small section of TB I saw under the TB Cover was only the tip of the iceberg- the other sections of belt were frayed badly and chunks of the backing were missing. "Hairs" from the frayed belt had started to collect under the TB Cover and it looked ROUGH.

To Toyota's credit, the TB/WaterPump and pulleys made it through TWO cycles of maintenance before being changed without breaking or causing major issues.

At the end of the day, the noise I have been chasing for weeks now was actually the :

..Fan Bracket Bearing.

The Idler Pulley sits right on the top of that bracket, so the "stethescope" test revealed noise being transferred from the Fan Bracket, through the Idler Pulley. While the TB definitely needed to be addressed, the Waterpump was in good operating order and the offensive noise was the bad fan bracket.

She's whisper quiet now, with a new Tensioner Assembly, Idler Pulley, Serpentine Belt, Timing Belt Kit, and Fan Bracket.

Got pics of the old belt?

My buddy had a 1992 Lexus SC300 for a few years that has been completely neglected by the previous owner. The car was an Illinois car its entire life with several large accidents, crappy repaint, and every panel and undercarriage completely rotted. Every seal leaked, interior was destroyed, etc. We popped the front engine cover off on his stock 2JZGE motor and of course the timing belt has never been changed. It looked just as bad as this one. The car had 130k miles but it's 25 years old. We beat the crap out of that thing, went drifting with it almost every time out, neutral drops, etc. Basically drove it in a way to TRY and break something, but nothing ever broke (aside from the rear subframe collapsing on us do to having so much rot and basically holes in the metal everywhere). Pop a new FL subframe in with no rust and we beat the crap out of that car for a few more years with no issues at all. Maybe he was lucky that the belt did not break, or maybe we just worry about this stuff too much and assume these belts and other parts are more brittle than they really are.

Dude, stupidly..I did not. Can't believe I forgot the aftermath shots.
