Finally happened. Timing belt broke on shut down on my daughters 1999. The question is, is the motor ruined? I ask because the car would not restart. Any insights and thoughts and send prayers. Anyone got a 4.7 laying around?

Ouch...... when was it done last?

Unfortunately it is an interference engine so most likely something got hurt..... you won't know how bad until its apart. Don't crank it anymore.

That sucks. Definitely don't try and crank it any more. How many miles on the belt? I've not heard of anyone breaking one, but honestly don't read a lot in the 100 section.

It won't restart if the belt broke. The valves and cams won't be spinning. Regardless of whether or not it made contact. Don't keep spinning it though with the starter! If it broke on shutdown and wasn't actively running, you may be OK. There are mixed reviews on the interference of the 4.7's. There have been reports of both damage and no damage after a belt breaking.

I'd turn the motor over by hand and listen for contact. Other option is to pull the heads and see what you find.

Don't assume worst case before checking into it.

At Jay's now. They will tear it down and see what is up. Fingers crossed. She filled up with gas and drove to a friends house. Came back out and tried to start a few times. Jay says the belt is spun off one of the cams and wrapped around the other.

Keep us posted!

I have a weird feeling it is just fine if it broke during start up unless it was just cranked and cranked. In this case, you should also kill a chicken, spread its blood on your other vehicles and then take the chicken claw and scratch yourself on the forehead - only one mark though.

Edit: I had my timing belt break on my Accord going up a hill, pushing pretty hard. No issues. Was interference engine, but just a 4 cyl. Maybe a whole different ballgame - -I don't know.

It was cranked and cranked. Fingers crossed. Buying a live chicken now.

Sorry to hear, I know kids get scared too when those things happen. If you can't find live chicken, I have done santeria with chicfila chicken nuggets, works the same.

I've got 119,787 miles on my 06 Tundra (interference engine). After reviewing the maintenance history and not seeing timing belt on the list, I purchased the timing belt kit from Amazon. I don't have a garage that I can work in but my goal is to replace the belt before I hit 120K miles.

Highly recommended. Is that the 4.7 or 5.7?

4.7L. I didn't want the newer and larger 2007+ Tundra. The 4.7 and 5.7 are both available in 07+.

The engine is toast. I need a 4.7L for a 1999 LC. Anyone got one laying around? ;<)

Looks to be a ton on ebay. I guess the tundra/4runner v8 works as well.

From what I remember reading in the 100 section there are small differences but it will work. @jrmudder92 swapped one in the LX I think.

Also I think the I-force ones here have weaker rods but that shouldn't matter at all unless you are planning on boosting. That million mile one was an i-force, US made one, so I don't think reliability is an issue with the non Japanese made motor either.

Car-part.com

found one for boostretard a couple years ago in knightdale 900 or 1200 with harness and accessories.

Compression test on all cylinders tomorrow.
