I'm thinking about a 2002 LC with 60000 miles. I read somewhere that you should change the belt at 100000 miles or 10 years. What does everyone think? whats it gonna cost me?

My bad I guess I read 6 years. so I should plan on it?
Well, I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but...

"Plan" on it, but don't panic. To hear everyone's comments you'd think the world was gonna end when you hit 90,000.1 miles. TB failures are extremely rare, if not unheard of, on this forum anyway. WAY more rare than the dreaded 2000 tranny failure. Yes, the cost of failure is high, so it should be done, If you look at it from a data perspective, the recommended service interval has to be WAY, WAY, WAY to the left of the beginning of the failure curve. Were it not so, Mr. T would be paying for millions of dollars in damages for parts that routinely failed BEFORE the recommended service interval.

By all means, plan on it when convenient in the near future along with water pump, idlers, etc., but don't hit the panic button, and rush to do it just because, unless you've got more money burning a hole in your pocket than I do.

6 years? Really? I don't drive close to 90k in 6 years in my LC. (15k/year) My Honda gets most of the miles.

Mine was changed in 2006 at 88k miles. Now at 140k. I don't plan on changing it until 180k.

You're dealership will tell you 6 years, they want your money. Toyota recommends 9 years 90k. If you're at 10 years I would plan on replacing it in the next few months.

I'm with Rob on this. If you're OCD and losing sleep then change it, otherwise you'll be fine until 90k. I've yet to hear of a single TB failure on a 100 series. In fact I'd bet there have been plenty sold with the claim that the 90k has been done when in fact it wasn't.

I think around $500 to $800.

And for the record, it's every 90k miles or something less than 10 years, maybe 7 or so.

Had my t belt, water pump and all the related gaskets etc. done by an independent shop last month that I've used for years. Total was $880.

Its a '00 and I had 120K on the clock. 30K past the holy grail of 90K.

I've seen timing belts from 4.7's with 130K/145K that look almost new.

Beno,

I'd be curious as to how many 4.7's you see in your shop for serious repairs related to the timing belts and/or water pumps not being done????

I wonder what the failure rate of these components are?

I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Plan for it and get it done when it's right for you.

Beno:
If he does his timing belt, are there other pieces you would replace because you are already in there- if so, what are they and what's the approximate cost for those parts?
