Our 2000 LX470 rolled 100,000 km (62 kmiles) a few weeks back. I was getting nervous about the age of the T-belt. This weekend I spent about 12 hrs replacing the belt and water pump.

My observations:

  • The belt looked like new. Just a little rubbing on the sides. Absolutely no rubber cracking or aging.
  • The water pump had leaked quite a bit and there was a lot of crud on the timing belt cover spacer.
Thanks for all the great info on this site. Without it, I would have never thought of removing those two AC compressor bolts to get the fan bracket off. I read somewhere that the oil filter may need to be removed to install the lower one, but I was able to get through it with a 12" extension and small socket.

It never ceases to amaze me how well the belts hold up. Nice work on the DIY too, saved a boatload of $!!!

Mine didn't get done until 147k miles. That's when I bought it. It was looking pretty worn, and was def. time for a new one. Just another testament to how long they can go on the originals....

I was very surprised to see all that weeping from the water pump at 62k miles. Is that common? My car (basically same engine with 4.0l displacement) has the original water pump at 200+k miles.

Depends. I had a 4Runner that went at 70k miles, but my Tacoma was fine at 140k miles.
