I gave the timing advance a shot Friday afternoon. Shorted out the E1 & TE1 terminals on the ECU service port. Didn’t get the flashing CEL, but the timing did change from 4-9* to a steady 3* after shorting the terminals. I advanced it to about 8*. Drove it all weekend and noticed a slight ping Sunday morning, so I changed the timing back to the stock 3*. Then the CEL came on. I advanced the timing back to 8* thinking the Cruiser liked the "new" timing. No dice (it was a shot in the dark anyway). So what the hell did I do?

I thought I’d read someone had the same or similar problem to this, but I couldn’t track it down.

No clue as to your cel but I have always been able to reset the cel on every computer controled toyota going back to a 94 Tercel by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes. (as yet untried on my LC)

i would get the code pulled. i got a CEL last night while closely checking operating temp. It was a completely out of left field code.

The CEL could be related to the PING. Get the code pulled and cleared and post it. Each rig is different and 8 deg may be too much for you.

I'll see what I can do about getting the code.

The CEL actually came on after I put the timming back to 3* and drove it for about 20mins.

Got the code...

P0104 - EGR Insufficient Flow. Bad EGR?

you will not get a flashing CEL when in timing mode on OBDII FZJ80s,

Oh boy, you'll want to search on that one. Lots of choices.

I searched yesterday, the only hit I got was this thread.
