A few weeks ago.. I advanced my timing from the factory setting (3 deg. BTDC) to 8.

This week Mrs. Flintknapper (who hears better than I do), said she thought she could detect some light "pinging"... (I had cautioned her to listen for it).

I backed off the timing to 4 deg. and let it go at that.

This afternoon, being curious...I put my scanner on the Cruiser to look for any "knock" codes. None were found, all was good....BUT I noticed the timing readout (according to my scanner) (AutoXray 5000) said 8.5 while the timing marks say 4.

Its not a big deal, because basically the numbers mean nothing. If you're not getting any "ping" and you're satisfied with the performance (no matter the amount of advance) then thats all that matters.

Assuming the scanner was correct, is it possible some of us are running our Cruisers much more advanced than what might be indicated by the marks?

Anyone else compared what their scanner said to what the marks reference?

Did you short the data-link before you made the adjustment?

Does your scanner have the ability to short out the ADL when reading your timing?

Indeed it does.

The AutoXray EZ-Scan 5000 allows OBD-I code reading and OBD-II code reading and system scanning. The EX-Scan 5000 supports OBD-II generic attributes, and allows the monitoring of supported OBD-II generic parameters of the car, such as intake air temp, coolant temp, air flow, timing advance, Oxygen sensor operation, fuel trim, and other parameters. These parameters can be monitored in real-time (with a slight delay due to scanning) as the vehicle is operated.

EZ-SCAN 5000
The next generation of automotive scanners have arrived. The AutoXray EZ-Scan is an OBD I and OBD II scanner which includes all OBD II protocols, including the newly released Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol, allowing for more capability and flexibility to manage the diagnostic process. The CAN protocol is currently being used in a variety of vehicles and will be the mandated protocol in all new vehicles by 2008. This tool includes all the benefits of the EZ-SCAN 4000 plus the added ability to scan OBD-I (1982-1995)vehicles(See VEHICLE COVERAGE below). Staying current with the very latest in automotive scanning doesn't have to be a complex effort. The CAN-compliant EZ-Scan makes keeping up with the latest a simple matter. Just turn to AutoXray, of course.
