yeah, single piece case definitely adds some element tp the project. Split-case is a lot easier in this regard.
What I would do it just tap it to 1/2 NPT for now until you have it out on a work bench and disassembled and can fix it correctly.

Wouldn't removing the PTO cover allow sufficient room to stick a magnet near the hole or at least place a small cup or something to contain any cuttings from straying during the drilling process? At least in keeping with this as an on the truck quasi-temporary method?

It’s hard to get the Time Sert in perfectly straight working from below the Transfer, and you have to drill and tap it to M20 anyway to get the insert in. If you don’t get it in perfectly straight, it will leak. Taping to 1/2” NPT is the same thing without the insert. You just need a new plug.
