Guys, I am super confused on what I need here. I have done some searching on the site and have read a lot of info concerning tie rods, tie rod ends, drag links, etc... I am looking to replace my tie rods on my 82 FJ60. My FSM is in my wifes car so I don't have it at the moment, but I will try to remember the picture the best I can. By the looks of the picture in the FSM and the kit on cruiser outfitters site, there are 4 pieces that I need. Are these all tie rods?

Unfortunately Kurt is out of stock of his tie rod kit and has been backordered for 2 months with no end in sight. I need to replace these ASAP, so I am trying to source them locally. I went to NAPA and their information only said two tie rods are required. Am I missing something?? Kurt's kit has 4 pieces and NAPA shows only two. Ideally I would like to purchase OEM from cruiser Dan, but I called and talked to another parts tech and I don't think I can afford those prices. Please help, as I need to replace them before Friday.

Thanks

Not too sure on the 60's but it is probably close to the 40's. There are 2 tie rod ends, plus two center link ends and 1 drag link end. I hope I got the terminology right.

Go to the SOR online catalog and look at their schematics. That's where I got my set.

It is an easy job with the right tools. Measure the distance between the centers of the tires before you start and change 1 piece at a time. Check the distance again after each piece.

Call Mudrak in Sonoma. He almost always carries the Japanese Joint Fuji ones that have grease zerks. I've been running a set of those in my 60 for almost 5 years with no problems. Mudrak is a good guy to deal with as well.

a center link is what is is called on an IFS truck. no worries i did the same thing a year ago and was called out on it by Texican. (old bastard:flipoff2:) "its just called a tie rod"

Thanks for the tips guys. I will contact Mudrack in the am. In the mean time is NAPA a waste of time? Ideally I would like to source locally so that I can perform the repair ASAP. Why are SOR's kits $155 and Cruiseroutfitter $89? Is there a reason the SOR is 70% more than Kurt's kits?

no nappa is fine they have moog parts and thats what i use on my personal vehicles, and usually what i put on customers cars, trucks.

NAPA has decent parts most of the time, but in this case--a waste of time.

SOR charges more because they stock damn near everything, including esoteric weirdness that drives up their overhead. They know their stuff, but they charge for it. You could do worse.....

Kurt at Cruiseroutfitters is great to deal with and he knows his stuff too. Just not in stock...

Try Mudrak. He is a true Cruiserhead and a good man. I seem to remember a stack of these the last time I was there a few months ago.

Awesome, thanks for the reply's. If Mudrack does not have any avaliable what should I ask for at NAPA? I have to get these replaced before the Labor Day weekend. I appreciate all the advice.

Kurt not in stock??? I placed an order with him personally last Thurs or Friday that included TRE's. Didn't ask the specific in-stock question, but Kurt told me that it was already packaged and ready to ship when calling me back for an invoice total. If I don't see the Man in Brown at my door tomorrow, I'll call Kurt for the definitive answer.

You need two tie rod ends and two relay rod ends. If you purchase them from toyota they each will come packaged with the tie or relay rod. At least mine did. They changed the length of the threaded portion of the end, and needed to also change the rod.

make sure you have a decent tool to separate the ends from their sockets. This can be a pain.

Got my tre kit from ccot on sale $90?
Heard mixed reviews on mud, we'll see.

Got the biggest puller from Autozone, I believe it was the pitman arm puller(they have two get the big one).
They will rent you one for free.
Do not use the small puller, it bends easily.
Smack em with a 5pound sledgehammer till done (they will give eventually)
tre kit is four pices as stated above
When I put mine back together, it felt sloppy ..until I got an alignment.
Now its tight and well worth the effort.

Good luck:D

Thanks for the input guys, I really appreciate everything. Talked to C-Dan a while ago, can't afford the OEM route. I ordered the kit from Man-A-Fre, $125, Mudrack was out of stock also. Napa was pissing me off, they didn't know what was needed and I didn't want to find out the hard way they gave me the incorrect part. Hopefully they will arrive soon. I rented a steering kit from Napa for free that has a huge tie rod puller and pickle fork. I will keep everyone posted on the progress.
Thanks again,
Chris

I just placed an order for the CCOT ones. Hopefully they are not the poorer quality..

Update: Kurt def. has the Japanese 555 TRE's. "Made in Japan" on the box and on each of the 4 pieces.
I just finished the top coat of Rusto on the set he sent me.

Bummer, I talked to Kurt yesterday and he did not have them in stock. He had just got a couple sets and all were Earmarked for others. Wile, I think you were one of the lucky ones!!!

Same situation when I talked to Kurt... Said his shipment is 2 months late. I guess I caught him at the wrong time.
