I just installed a set of 555 tie rod ends on my '83 FJ60. Something just doesn't look right where the relay rod(drag link as some call it) connects to the tie rod on the passenger side. The relay rod end is bottoming out against the tie rod and I haven't completely torqued it yet. It seems like the hole is too large where the Relay rod tapered stud connects. I think there should be more space so the relay rod end can move freely without rubbing/binding. Any thoughts?

Yeah that doesn't look right. Is it possible that that end should attach to the pittman arm instead? It's been a while since I did my TREs on my 60, but if I recall the two relay rod ends look similar, but maybe have a different taper?

Thank you. I checked and the rod ends are where they should be. The end that attaches to the pitman arm has the attachment point for the steering dampner.

For anyone who is interested. I ordered a replacement tie rod end, installed it and it allowed for the proper fit of the relay rod end.
Ouch! Thanks for the update. I need to check mine before I tear everything apart

Aftermarket parts don't fit properly. Surprise!

(very common with aftermarket parts)

...just had this happen too. Wild.
I've had good luck with 555 products too.
But, lo-and-behold: the TRE would only take 40-45ish foot/lbs, and kept pulling through.
And go figure; I'd painted them and everything. So; no chance for return.

I'm contacting CruiserTeq/@cruiseroutfit regarding this.

Hope they can send me a replacement!

555 is the OE... probably got a funky friday afternoon packaged kit. I'd never hesitate to use that brand, for what it's worth.

I agree. This is a SOLID option. But this particular set, seems to be defective.
Checked my Torque Wrench... it's in spec.

555 is not the OE manufacture for Toyota. They are an aftermarket brand.

I understand they are an aftermarket, but I was under the impression that they were the OE supplier. Alas, I have forgotten much. That said, a lot of the older guys I learned from swear by them; FWTW.:meh:

I'm not saying they are bad, I sell and stock 555 kits for 40/60/70/80/100 series now, we also stock OEM TRE's as well and give customers the option. We have found the OEM parts do last a bit longer.

skool ain't closed yet! Thanks @cruisermatt

Update for anyone following here, and praise given where EXCEPTIONALLY due:

I contacted @cruisermatt / CruiserOutfitters, whom I've done business with for many years for any L/C or Solid Axle Toyota I've had, and they triaged this issue in a single day. They asked specifically about how the issue happened, and any inducing factors (e.g. clapped torque wrench, etc.), and then had their people look into it. Within 24hrs, they sent me a replacement part, and wished me well.

BY COMPARISON, 5-7 years ago, I had (somehow ironically now) the SAME issue with a set of 555 Sankei TRE's bought from another long-standing Cruiser-specific company. I asked the SAME questions, and asked for some type of help or compensation... and they called me and brow-beat my ability to wrench on my own vehicle. I had to re-order, at full price, and vowed to never buy from them again unless absolutely necessary.

Thank you. Seriously. This really reminds me why, in the 'modern era' of FB groups and posting for optics, and even flash-in-the-pan marketing... that there's integrity still out there in a long standing community for this old iron.

Ride on.
