This year I'm trailering my FJ40 to Tellico, ready or not. anyhow, I've bought a new trailer and am pricing vehicle tie down straps, quite pricey! Anyone have any suggestions on brand, WLL, or suppliers? Don't really wanna skimp but I wouldn't mind saving a few bucks either....
I got my nylon straps at Rural King and have used them for two years now with no problems. One through front tow hooks and second strap through rear tow hooks on hitch. Just inspect them often for cuts because sharp edges will cut them.
I hauled heavy equipment at a former job and the main thing I learned is if you are using chains get the ratcheting binders. The cost of the stiches in your head will cost more than the difference between them and the old style pry bar type binders.
I've got the older 10k ratchet straps from Home depot. I tried to get a spare and all I can find are the 10k rated, 3333 working load ones. They are not as thick as my older 10k working load ones. I have used them a lot and I use 2 per axle so if one breaks you have a back-up. I bought one of the Home depot 3333 working load straps as the spare. I don't think I would use these as the primary straps. I would use 3 per axle if I had to use the lighter straps.
I don't use chains as they can break with no warning, a strap will usually give indication for a long time that it is wearing out.
I'm currently in Moab and a buddy arrived yesterday and had these great straps that go around the axle ( about 18" long with rings at both ends and an abrasion sleeve) that he got from Summit racing for about $12, he said. I'll be getting a set of those so I don't have to mess around threading the long straps through all the brake lines and such.
Careful with Chains and binders. If you use them make sure you go under the break line that sits on top of teh Axel.
I use an axle strap and sinched that I bought at the trailer store. 2 on front 2 on back each witha separate axle strap.
Works fine
