So I ran into a snag last night installing an Aussie locker, the thrust washer tolerances are way tight :frown: I thought it might just be grease in the spacers so I went ahead and installed the cams, but I cant get the pinion shaft in. I've read people machining down the thrust washers, any ideas here?

Is there anywhere that sells different thickness washers other than the dealer, someone said SOR but I don't see them on their site.

I've been thinking about it this morning, is there an issue with this tolerance being to tight? I would assume as long as the cam tolerance is in spec, and it operates normally this wouldn't hurt anything? From what I can tell the caps (spacers) are more or less to keep the clips on the shaft, and the locker cams slide over them?

Thoughts?

BTW: I can get the cross-pin in, but it takes encouragement.

i run mine on the tight side . but if you have to encourage the cross pin in there i wouldn't do it like that .
i did it really tight with one of mine and after a month i had to get back in there to replace an axle seal .and there was no way i could get that center cross pin out . it had funny wear marks on it and got stuck in the carrier i ended up hammering the pin into the center of the diff a bit rotating the gears 180 degrees and had to cut the shaft off with a grinder piece by piece hamering it all the way through the carrier
don't force it in . i got proper washers from the dealer and set it up still on the tight side .but at least i could push the pin in with my fingers. I have had no issues with it being a bit too tight for the past 4 years , less clunking or banging in corners and parking lots when it is a bit to tight ,just nice smooth ratcheting noise.

I hear you man, prolly not the best idea in case something breaks on the trail either :frown: Bought a caliper to get measurements on my washers at lunch, just hate to have it down for the weekend to order them ...

Less clunking with it tighter? I would've guessed the opposite. Mine is kind of clunky in parking lots...

when i first set it up it was on the loose side and always banging and popping ,even going down a straight road every once in awhile it would bang and cause the rig to wiggle or pull to one side or the other .after a year of that i decided to check the tolerances and reset it up a bit on the trighter side of the spec and the thing has worked flawlessly ever since .barely even notice it back there .really quite

maybe with it being tighter it puts more load on the couplers keeping them locked a bit tighter and the locker will require more force to cause it to disengage therfore less clunking ,i don't no .this is just what i have noticed with my locker. this may cause more tire wear ,mine still ratchets nice and smooth .
:meh:

well actually i started with the thickest washers as per info on this forum and then found it to tight to get the center pin in by just using my fingers and a slight tap of the hammer. so i went with the second thickest washers and found that to be just right .

when installing the locker they ask you to check two different measurements for one of the measurements i was right on spec but for the end clearance (c-clip retainer cover for lack of better words) to center pin i had zero clearance so i left it at that and it has worked flawlessly ever since even my wife can park it without a loud bang . i love my locker and don't even notice it back there anymore when cruising around the city .my rig sees the gravel road like 3 times year it seems these days and i haven't even thought about yanking the locker out of there. :grinpimp:

heres an old thread where i asked a few different questions and at the end of the thread i mention the issue i had with the locker being super tight .

I thought Kurt at cruiser outfitters had some but have wrong before

We do, they are not on the website (yet) but if you call I can look up the thickness's we have here on the shelf. Thanks!

So tore everything back apart last night, and it turns out the thrust washers I have are 2.10mm ... the thickest Toyota makes :frown: For future reference, Toyota stocks 4 different thicknesses:

P/N: 41361-x

1.55-1.65 (60011)
1.70-1.80 (60021)
1.85-1.95 (60031)
2.00-2.10 (60041)

Unfortunately these are special order, I also see them listed a MAF here:

Differential

I used the following from another post to determine which to order:

>> The way I do it, is install the parts without thrust washers
>> and measure the intercam gap. Then take away from this measurement
>> say 0.155" divide by two and that is the thickness for each individual
>> thrust washer. This will yield a gap opf 0.155" which is middle of
>> the road.

From this I need 1.77mm (.07"), so the 1.70-1.80mm (41361-60021).

Have a call in to Kurt to see what he stocks ;)

Hope this helps others down the road -

Good tech. Kurt should add a page. :hint:

When you say 0.155 is middle of the road, what is the range? Where, from left-to-right on the stack do you measure? Anyone know if this differs from locker to locker? There's Aussie, Powertrax, etc.

I got mine used with no manual and I just put it together with my existing thrust washers. Actually I put it together without them the first time and had to swap the spider gears back on the side of the road, in the dirt, with a bottle jack.

This measurement is the middle of the range (.145"-.165") for the operating space between the cams once installed. This is only for Aussie lockers, not sure if the dimensions match exactly on the others -

Fwiw, we stock all of those, they are OEM so the prices won't be much better than the dealer but we have them here and ready to ship. They will eventually be on our gear/axle/locker page here:

Good call, I'll add it to our axle tech pages!
