I threw a rod on #4 cylinder today so my 3B is done, with a nice hole in the block behind the starter, at 630,000 km's. Just driving down the dirt potholed road when there is a cloud of steam in the rear view mirror. I shut it down with the key (it did not seize up or stop abnormally) pull over and pop the hood and there is water everywhere and oil all around the starter area. I need to go and find another engine at the engine importers here in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
What "B" series engines will fit my BJ60 engine bay and bolt up to my H55? Can I use a 13B or 14B or 15B if I find one?
What vehicles besides Land Cruisers and Dyna trucks used these engines? I need to know so when looking for an engine I can ask for an engine that fits more than one vehicle.
What about bolting up the AXT turbo? Will these other engines take the AXT manifold? Will my accessories bolt to these other blocks? The A/C mount for instance?
Do any generation of the "B" engines have a built in power steering pump? What about spare parts like the water pump or injectors and the like. Do these cross over to other "B" series engines? I'll assume the injectors don't cross over to the direct injection type engines, ie: the 1XB models, but I imagine the other parts might.
Are any generation of "B" engines in current production? Are there any "B" series engines that are electronically controlled (I don't want one of those)? Are there any "B" series engines that do not fit the engine bay or bolt up to my tranny?

I'm hoping to get this all taken care of in the next week or two.

Watch for an engine swap in deepest darkest Africa!!

You should be able to use all of them with varying degrees of modification
The later ones have built in vac pumps ,power steering pump and have rotary injection pumps.
Anything with E on the end will be electonic
Coasters also use the B engines as well as Diahatsu Deltas. Hino are also reputed to use them but I think they will be electronic.
Take note of the air intakes as they will be coming from cab over vehicles.

Find an engine and check the part numbers and research it here ToyoDIY.com

Wow, that is too bad!
Good luck finding something...I wonder what caused it?

Could be the fact that is has 630 000 km on an original engine :/. It happens lol

AFAIK ,only the 1HZ and 2H have reached a million klms and the 2H did it without the ring problem everyone says it bad for;)

630000 km with a turbo fitted, i think it should RIP now

Sorry to hear of your problems Charles!!

On the brighter side, 630,000 km, that's equivalent to almost 400,000 miles. That's a lot of miles on a motor, which tells me that your motor was well cared for.

Outside of mechanical problems, how's everything going over there? Everybody is well?

Don

Don, other than the blown engine we're doing all right. Being that we are in the developing world I don't expect a problem to find another "B" series engine as these are the simple tough engine folks like here and a lot more of these engines were sent over there than in the states.

John, I rebuilt the 3B that went into the FJ55. That now lives in Tennessee. I did swap the head because another 3B that I had in the past cracked the head so I put the good head on the keeper 3B and the tired factory head on the one I sold but that was at least 8 years and more than 200,000kms ago.

If there is a bright side in this, I was going to change the oil when I got home yesterday so I guess I saved a gallon and a half of oil and a filter!

Sorry to hear ! A 3B you will not find here but 14B/15B etc you will. Buddy of mine has a 14B into his FJ 40 with an H55F box and she is fine bar the upright gear lever from an H150F box

PM sent

Sorry about to hear this and hope you can get the rig back on her feet. I can tell you that a 14bt exhaust manifold has different bolt patterns then the B-series rigs. But the intake is the same. If you run into that engine w/exhaust manifold I can help you with the adapter so that you can get your turbo mounted as I know your along way from home. Good luck, hopefully a suitable solution with present itself.

This is good to know. I suspect most if not all the engines I'll find are from/for cab-over Dyna or Coaster applications. At least I should be able to use my intake manifold to fix that.

Got pics of the adapter for the exhaust side? We have a guy here who's pretty good at fabrication, welding and the like. There is also a machine shop at the mine an hour away but I don't know if I can ask for that much though but with a picture I'll certainly try!

Any idea on what he paid for the 14B? I don't mind paying a fair price but I don't like getting screwed because I'm perceived to be a "rich white man".

Good luck in finding the engine. Trying to recall why you moved from
Cranbrook BC to Africa? Stay safe!

We're working here with an NGO rebuilding a hospital ruined in the war (remember "Blood Diamond"?) and drilling water wells.

I'm going into Freetown today or tomorrow to start the search.

One of my buddies is in Freetown and he was good enough to look for an engine for me there (I'll owe him a big one!).

Apparently one of the importers has a 3B that has just come off the boat. He wants a cool Le25,000,000. That's a lot of zero's and comes out to about $5800. Anyone know what these are going for now a days out of Japan? It seems like an awful lot to me.

If it is a 3B it would make getting the truck going again easy as I have all the necessary parts and a few spares to boot!

He bought he truck with the 14B already fitted by Bailies Off Road.It actually belonged to Stuart Bailie himself. There are a few Jap engine importers in ZA but I suspect it might be better to do it directly if you decide to go that route.

Thats alot of money. Around here they go for $1K+, maybe 1500-2000 with trans/t-case.

Are you sure?

How much is there in common between a 1994 3B and a 1982 3B for instance?

(B series engines have been evolving over a long time and Toyota has had to keep issuing new Engine FSMs to keep up-to-date with all the changes.)

(Sorry that I'm throwing a spanner in the works rather than being helpful.)
