Hi friends, I'm interested in purchasing an 80 series and I'm curious to get everyone's thoughts on the rust on this 96 lx450. It's got relatively "low" miles and the price seems ok, but this is a bit rustier than I'm used to working on. I'm looking to purchase a vehicle to have "forever", not just buy and flip.

Is this a hard pass?

Carfax says this particular car was in Chicago *shudder* for 13 years prior to going to California in 2009

It’s definitely going to need some involved work to properly fix and that can be expensive if you can’t do it yourself or know someone. There is likely more hidden elsewhere as well. You can likely find something cleaner to start with if you’re on the west coast so I would suggest passing. It’s not the worst if you live in salt areas, Canada etc but why bother if you can access clean ones.

Like post #3.

There are plenty of rust free California specimens, waiting for the right one may take months, but be worth it.
If this is going to be a forever vehicle get rust free and know that mileage is irrelevant. At this age, even low mileage will have every seal aging past the point of effective sealing. Thus, a "forever" vehicle will need a rebuild to return it to rock solid status. A baseline that is normally mentioned here wouldn't include valve guide seals, crank seals, etc. It won't be a dirt cheap endeavor, but will be as solid as anything new, maybe even more so.
I did all of the above. And, now I love my beast.

What's the price?

Seems like everyone is in agreement. Thank you all for the input. My search for a rust free 80 continues

13 years in Chicago im surprised its not worse! Definitely hard pass! Be patient the right one will come along.

What's the price?
Owner is asking $12k. It's in WA, has 185k miles, new dobinson stock height suspension and a swing out rear tire carrier steel bumper. Aside from that it appears to be bone stock and (apart from the rust) in excellent condition. Not triple locked.

Comparing it with other specimens on my local market the price seemed like a fair starting point at the moment. However that's what I thought prior to seeing the rust, now it seems high.

Yeah, as mentioned above, the price in hassle factor of rust is high. Moreover, what you can't see is likely to be way worser!
In my complete reset/rebuild I broke exactly zero bolts, and, some were mofo tight!

12k is way too much. The thing with the LX, is all the s*** you're gonna find behind all the plastic.

Keep looking, but be patient, you'll have that "ah ha moment" where it clicks

Sorry for context those last pics I posted are of a different cruiser. It appears to have less rust. Would love to hear opinions on this other cruiser as well
