The deflector ring (#30 in the pic) on my rear drive flange is spinnig loose and making a god-awful noise. Being the idiot newb that I am, I can't see how to keep it from spinning. Can anyone help me with this?

You might be able to put a little silicone or something similar to hold it in place...spray it all down with brake cleaner to try and get it free of oil before hand. It is usually a press fit, but there isn't much force on it...

or you could take it all apart, but then you risk not getting the preload back on correctly.

You could tack weld it or get a new flange. Changing flanges isn't hard as long as the preload and bearings are OK to start with.

I had a third with this problem. The PO had siliconed the deflector to the third member itself to stop leaks - its not clear if they did that before or after the deflector became loose. :bang:

Anyway, I pulled the flange and then just put some dents in the deflector's sleeve and pressed it back on.

I'd worry about having the seal directly exposed to everything you drive over...

Will it hurt anything to just cut it off, or is that a dumb idea?

You can if you want to.

A lot of people who wheel their junk regularly have knocked them loose and simply remove the companion flange from the differential, remove the debris shield and then put the companion flange back on.

I know guys that knock them off a new or replacement flange before installing it so that they will not have to do it later.

There are many older automotive applications where the seal at the pinion is not ‘protected’ by any means, and have worked fine for hundreds of thousands of miles.

:meh:
