Thinking of trading my 80 for 100

Yeah, but what's the actual failure rate on the nav system? I think it's one of those outliers that gets undue attention because we read about it here on the forum.
that is the same theory I am hoping for on my tranny. other than that I just like things like having a dipstick for the transmission on the Pre 2003 models and to me it just seemed simpler to work on.

@Hayes and @LandCruiserPhil I'm curious what you miss / don't miss. Thanks for input on the trans dates.

I had a longer, rambling reply about the 80 being simpler and more utilitarian, but I realized those are also the things I don't miss, so nevermind that.

I miss the way the front end of my 80 handles off road. Granted: I'm acclimating to the 100 front end and I think the actual capability differential is smaller than I perceive it to be, but I still miss the front end if my 80.
Except for 99% of the time I'm driving it.

100s are great for around town and for mild to medium offroad trails. Anything higher on the trail rating and its fun to watch if your not the one stacking rocks. The suspension can be very expensive to fix, but is very comfortable in how it handles. If you put a locker in the front then stuff breaks if you put much force on the front. Its basically a different level with a hundy compard to a 80. On a scale of 1 to 10, a hundy is about 3 or 4 clicks down on offroad ability. But its about 3 clicks up on luxury and cruising comfort. So it depends what your lifestyle points too. Yes some of the older ones had trans problems, but keep in mind too you are talking about transmissions that most people never change the fluid on because Toyota really doesn't recommend changing it. Toyota wants to keep up with mercedes whom claims zero maintenance on their transmissions. I guess they felt that would attract buyers. And they still feel that way with the 200 series. Although every time I have pulled the plug on a trans with WS fluid its black and looks terrible. At worst the trans will go out at 150k miles. If it was a ford you would be almost ready for a 3rd transmission at that many miles.

Don't do it!!!

Do it!!!!

Don't do it!!!

Do it!!!

Keep the 80!!!

Score a 100!!!

Drive them both!!!

My 80 feels and drives like a tank!!!

My 100 LX feels and drives like a tank on a cloud!!!

I agree with a lot of what you say but a 100 will go 95% of the places most 100 owner are willing to go. I will say I did Hole in the Rock trail with an Atrac only equipped 100 with 33's and it did fine much to my surprised.

I had a pretty built Tacoma since 2005, custom suspension, mid travel, internal bypass, bumped, etc. I loved it for the desert but once our son came around I need a "minivan" for our trips. As a outdoorsman and Toyota fan the "minivan" I wanted was the flagship of Toyota vehicles, the Land Cruiser. I started with the 80, which I think is the best body style LC ever but after factoring in family safely, comfort and towing it was the 100. Its going to go everywhere I want to go with the family. Maybe later on I'd get a 80 and mad max it out and do some stupid stuff with it ha. I really couldn't be happier with my 100.

We just transitioned from the 80 to a 2001... My 80 was built well and I knew that truck like the back of my hand. We love the 100. Personally, I would go w/ least amount of miles, color you prefer and the right budget - best buy. All these trucks are built extremely well and you pick one up that has been well maintained, should be good2go...

Great way to put it and I agree; I also agree about missing the front end of the 80, but for me the positives far outweigh the negatives when it comes to the 100.

Would love to have another 80 in great shape as a second vehicle though.
