munwofe and I are Thinking of moving And NC aid one place were thinking of . Not sure where but Like to be around cruisers , where in NC is the best place to reside ? We have no kids just dogs I do Hvac and my wife is a dentist office manager and has a degree . I currently belong to Yamkee
Toys up here in New England . Any help would be great And thank you Jason

Best place to reside is pretty subjective and what may be great for one might not be great for you. With your two careers you could really go anywhere. The main cruiser hubs in NC seem to be Charlotte, Raleigh or High Point area but we have members all over. I'd recommend coming for a visit and going from asheville to the coast to see what fits you better.

Your truck looks pretty dope man!

I'd recommend Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, but I'm biased. I moved down here a bit over 7 years ago, was a member of GCLCNY beforehand. You won't regret it, that's for sure.

Primary wheeling place is in Uwharrie. We can wheel on some of the beaches down here, some at the outer banks, and some farther south. Lots of wheeling in western NC, and eastern TN between Pisgah/Cherokee national forests, Windrock, and even Harlan in KY.

Moving from up north, youll be familiar with personal property tax and state income tax. Those were new to me when we moved up from fl in 2000. Find a smaller town outside of a larger city. Summerfield is much better than Greensboro, even though they touch each other. Greensboro city has higher taxes than summerfield, and both have guilford county taxes. Had I known, I would have built in Summerfield vs Greensboro. Some counties have higher taxes than others, and some have stricter emissions on vehicles.

Spend a week or two roaming around to see what area you like. Mtns, sandhills/piedmont, or the coast. In the Triad (Greensboro, High Point, Winston Salem), we are about 3 hours from everything. Mtns are 3 hours or less away, beach is 3 hours away, Charlotte can be 3 hours away. Plus you get all kinds of town names that your wife will either laugh her butt off or be totally offended by to have on an address label. High Point, Climax, and Horneytown are just a sampling

As mentioned above, pay close attention to taxes from town to town and county to county. When I moved from the Fl Keys to Hendersonville, NC taxes played a part in it. I looked at places around Buncombe (Asheville area) and Henderson (Hendersonville area) counties. Big difference in tax structures. It's not just on your house either, your vehicles are also taxed and newer vehicles come with higher tax bills. Get a list of exactly what they tax when it comes to personal property .

Something often overlooked, building codes. If you are looking to build in the future it is worth digging into building codes, set backs, height restrictions etc.

We bought a small farm in Chesnee, SC, Spartanburg County. All things mentioned above were very favorable. This area got a shot in the arm a few years back when it was announced that the Word Equestrian Games would be held in Tryon, NC. We lucked out that our property here is about 30 miles out and our property in Hendersonville, NC is about the same distance north of Tryon on the mountain.

Point being, getting a grip on what may be already in the pipeline in the areas you are looking may serve you well.

Good luck and look me up if you are in WNC or Upstate SC

Man... my wife gets mad at me for pulling her from NY, particularly when we go grocery shopping and "this-here-aint-no-wegmans". 18 years I have been here now as a Yankee refugee, she still wont let go of her wegmans card.

jaydufe, depends what you like in terms of location. I like mountains, so would head to the NW part of the state.

I do not blame her on the Wegmans, there are three coming to the Raleigh area I believe. We went to one in PA where my Mom lives, my first time. OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!! If one comes to Charlotte we'll drive.

Izzy, you're welcome to visit me in Concord this February. Frozen toes and a frozen nose are good reminders for why it's better down there.

To the OP it's all good down there. I personally like the Asheville area best, but for proximity to Cruiser Criticsl mass, Charlotte or Raleigh-Durham areas as mentioned. If you have kids, watch your school districts closely, I live a million things about NC the schools ain't one of'em. Make the move. You won't miss winter for a second. They threw my Yankee ass out, so I'm back to snow plowing in NH, but some day.....some day...

Come to the 'bro, Bro - 1:30 to Uwharrie, 2:30 to Boone, 2:30 to Wilmington:3:30 to Asheville, and 2:30 to Charlotte. All in a small town atmosphere with good schools.

Pittsboro, NC

We have a lot of cool stuff going on:

  • the world's largest collection of Orchid varietals
  • the world's largest domestic cat sanctuary
  • one of America's best soda shops
  • the Roy Underhill Woodwright Shop and School
  • a big cat sanctuary
  • a distillery, three breweries, a meadery, a cidery and a winery
  • tons of potters and artists to include the President of the NC Pottery Association
  • low taxes
  • great schools with a brand new highschool and middle school coming in <4 years
  • charming downtown with a lot of active mom/pop shops
  • County has a large lake (Jordan Lake) that is minutes away from town
  • . .all in a town of 4K and a county of ~70K. We are one of the fastest growing counties in NC

Call me anytime here if you want to talk about it :)

Welcome

There is one right off I-95 on exit 156 in VA, I would hit it every Monday morning when I was heading into Pentagon City for the week, then hit it again on Friday on my way back home to NC, with a bunch of stuff to bring home. Did that for 3 years, more or less. I do miss that diesel Golf....

I really should be more active on this board. We moved down from VT about 8 years ago for a job and there is no way my wife would ever go back. And she is diehard New England. We love it here. Schools here in the Mooresville area are amazing and we are 1/2 to the airport= which is good for me. less than 2 to Asheville. Lots to do. Definitely take the above advice and take your time shopping around. You will like it.

The Triad, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point, puts you in the middle of the state, about equal distance from the coast and mountains and close to Uwharrie where the majority of the off roading seems to be. As a plus, the cruiser people in the Triad are terrific and will embrace a newcomer with open arms. If you come to NC for a visit, try to plan the first Tuesday for the monthly Triad get together. The time and place will he posted on this forum.

Wherever you move to, welcome in advance to NC.

^^Boo @custyota LOL

I was about to say "The Sierra Nevada range is short like the Appalachian range," but then I looked it up and apparently you have peaks in the 14K range . . .

Also . . .

I forogot to mention . . . Pittsboro - - 15 mins to UNC Chapel Hill, 15 mins to Cary/Apex, 25 mins to NC State, 20 mins to Durham and 45 mins to Greensboro . . . . but you don't NEED to go to those places :)

I will also put a plug for FINDING a decent school system even if you DO NOT have kids. Counties with great school systems down here carry a LOT of weight for future development, stability of housing prices and overall better economics.

I parked my butt here in the Triad / Winston-Salem area. I don’t think you can beat the cost-of-living here and overall lack of traffic. As noted above you are centrally located in the state and can access mtns., coast, off-roading, nice camping/lakes, etc. with a 1-3 hr drive. Asheville, Charlotte, and Raleigh, all have their unique advantages but you will pay more for it. Winston has pretty much anything you might need (other than a Wegmans...whatever that is...). It’s a nice overall balance. Good luck with whatever area you choose!
