Steve's point about finding a city you like and then picking a surrounding suburb town to live in is exactly right. I'd save about 30-40% on taxes if I had the same house a mile or so down the road... Summerfield, Oak Ridge - they have some of the best schools around.

If you can swing it, narrow down to a specific area, and see about doing a 6 month lease on an apt. Throw your stuff in storage while you determine where exactly you want to live. Then find your place to buy or build, and move.

My neighborhood has amazing middle and high schools, which we had to fight like hell to get zoned into. The area to the east and southeast of me is sketchy. There are chunks of each of the three cities in the Triad (winston, greensboro and high point) that have sketchy areas. The area where i live is exploding with new development. Our neighborhood was county only, but had city water and sewer. We were annexed into Greensboro 3 years later, and our taxes doubled. We did get snowplow action on the 3 days a year the snow actually sticks, and a new fire station about a mile away. Had I known about Summerfield, we would have built there instead. Oak Ridge is similar. Summerfield actually straddles both Guilford and Rockingham counties. Rockingham county's taxes are lower than Guilford, but youre out a bit further. Stokesdale is also a very nice area, about 15 to 20 mins out of town.

We just moved up from Atlanta. We settled in North Davidson County. Rural, low key, low taxes! Lexington address but Closer to Winston-Salem restaurants and arts. Dislike the States "Weighted-Tag" fees! They treat you like your commercial.
I've got a good builder if ya need one.

Looks a little different than the last time I saw it.

I am biased, but I live in Soutb Cakalacky where taxes are low (except on my camper) and real estate is a bit more reasonable.

Everything that has been stated above is very good info and I cannot add anything worthwhile here.

As I said, I am biased and this view is a big part of it

Man... my wife gets mad at me for pulling her from NY, particularly when we go grocery shopping and "this-here-aint-no-wegmans". 18 years I have been here now as a Yankee refugee, she still wont let go of her wegmans card.

jaydufe, depends what you like in terms of location. I like mountains, so would head to the NW part of the state.
Did you say WEGMANS?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Izzy, where y'all from in NY?? I am from the 'burbs of Buffalo!!!

I noticed you are from Clarence, my wife is from Westchester, but went to High School in Orchard Park. We lived later on in Rochester/Pittsford, up there about 15 years
