Thinking about new tires

I think everyone has given great advise, little that I can add.

No, articulation is only impacted if one's tire size is hitting body parts and/or if one decides to install extended bump stops.

The one issue I did want to point out is how dramatically the larger tires DO impact the final drive ratio such that I found a 35" tire made it feel slow and unresponsive. The popular opinion is that "it's fine", same story I heard in the FJC world. Yet, regearing my little FJC brought the gearing back to how Mr. T designed it to be and it was fun to drive on the road again. No more cruise control kick-downs over every slight change in elevation are head-wind.

That's why I'd stay with 33's unless you are committed to a larger tire, regearing should be included in the budget.

Just my 2 cents...

^X2. Going up in tire size should be considered as a "package deal" with tires, gearing, brakes, and steering all taken into consideration. Minor tweaks can be made with acceptable degradation to other areas, but what is acceptable to one person is unacceptable to others.

For personal reasons, not religious ones on tire deitys, I am leaning towards Hercules Ironman ALL COUNTRY M/T or TRAIL DIGGER M/T . Both come in 285/75/16, a 33 inch diameter. Made by Cooper.

Thanks elkaholic, I understand that perspective. Don't need to overstress the drivetrain. And I can go bigger later with all the giblets necessary.

Solid points made here. The only reason I opted 35" is to prevent from having to purchase a second set later.

FYI .... if you go 305/70 16 and only buy 4 I have an extra you can use as spare.

@CharlestonG8R I still have one for you as well if you are still in need. You coming to Meet & Greet?

33 fits on factory spare tire carrier. 35 doesn't. Just i thought

Thanks man, did not know that. Didn't you like my all-season with "tire-plug-repair-still-hanging-out" spare? Hah! I fixed the tire that popped yesterday ($16 at Firestone), and placed the spare under truck and noticed the repair plug, muy "barrio".....

So you just read the recent Toyota 4WD Owner magazine?

Yes tire size has no effect on articulation. There are instances where larger tire may cause some rub but at specs described it would be negotiable and solved with hammer or spray paint :grinpimp:

If you are a traveling man a 285 is same night and a hair thinner but also much more common should you need a replacement in some small town middle America.

I ran 285s right after my 1st set of springs. First mod was sliders. Second was 35s ;)

Thanks, @Rice! Yes, I am planning to attend the Meet and Greet. It looks like I may not need the spare after all, though, so I'll bring you a 6-Pack of Holy City or Palmetto (or a jar of @erymer 's Apple Pie, let me know)... The tires I run are 285's and the spare is a 275, so it should be good enough to get me off the trail. My BFG's are good for a couple more runs on the trail, but it's near time for an upgrade. This post was created at the right time! I have OME Mediums on my 80, but, they are a bit compressed in the front. Since I am also thinking of redoing the lift to go a bit higher, and possibly regearing, I may go bigger than 33's. The 80 isn't my primary transportation, but the wife will probably force me to trade it in for a Honda Accord if I ever run in to a situation where all 3 LC's are down again.

No problem. I'm happy to sip some apple pie with you but no way am I taking payment for something you didn't buy. Looking forward to M&G.

Apologies to OP for the hijack.

One of the benefits of a Vortec swap is that stock 80 gears with 35's and standard 4L60E will put the overall ratio between the base Vortec engine Silverado and the "Heavy Duty" towing package. So running stock gears with 35s atually works out well

One of the benefits of a Diesel swap is that you can run 37s with the stock running gears and get 20+ MPG

Let's not clutter up this tire thread (any more) with talk of motor swaps. Start up a new thread or send some PMs around please :D
