Great write up - I've been following this for a while. Keep the trip reports coming. I will have to drive my wagon from SoCal to Orlando in June so I am keen to hear any advice you hand out.

Plan more than one day of base lining your rig before heading out on your trip! HAHA.

Siphon gas out of your neighbors cars and drive straight out of CA to where gas is reasonable.

Paid $2.29 in Nevada after paying $3.69 in CA. Just filled up for $1.75 in WY.

Pack some distilled water, spare belts and hoses, and have fun!

883 miles down. 1098 left. I'm done for the day. Blowing snow and sleet. Just isn't worth pushing in. I'll drive the last 70ish miles to Trail Tailor in the morning and head out from there. Won't make it home tomorrow night but will try to get to Omaha.

Sucker. I'm still at JFK. I hope you get to enjoy a little bit of Utah. Please use established "facilities" in our state.

I enjoyed the Del Taco by Park City immensely. Good food and the scenery was fun.

I'm already in WY. I was going to push through another 75 minutes but I'm done. Was going to crash in the 80 again but wussed out and got a hotel room. The Lowe's discount is pretty generous so I splurged. Need a shower and a bed.

Del Taco is pretty dang good for what it is. Fun trip man, I am enjoying the updates.

Where the hell did you fill up? Topless carwash?

There is nothing around here over $3/gal.

Del Taco reminds me of Taco Bueno. I love Taco Bueno. The only thing I miss from Texas. Otherwise, F&$@ Texas!

Fossil Falls. I started filling up then saw the price. Stopped filling up. Pushed my luck and barely made it to Giggle Springs, NV with a few miles to spare.

Some hijinx for the trip. The spring is missing for the gas door. So it doesn't pop open. The release works fine. Just no spring. I have a door at home I'll pull the spring off of when I get home.

Anyway, I have to ask someone to help me open the gas door when I get gas. In Giggle Springs there was a girls college soccer team getting gas. I asked one of the girls if she would help me. She looked scared. (Can't blame her. On my good days I look like a terrorist...) Anyway, she declined, rudely, and jogged in to the gas station. Another girl came over and offered to help. She said "She was probably scared you were going to kidnap her." My response "Nah. She'd complain to much. You'd be a lot more fun." I immediately regretted my smart ads comment. She looked at me and said "True." We laughed and she said "Cool truck. Good move on the whole 'I need help opening the gas door' thing. Smooth."

So, tip for the single dudes. Go out to your 80 and rip the spring out.

I passed on hitting up the Bonneville Salt Flats. Didn't feel like taking down the land speed record with the 1FZ-FE...

This time of year, it would take a LC 80 to cross the flats. I was deployed there once for military duty, and a couple of idiots took a rental car out on the flats and totalled it.

The plates are broken up and effectively swiped the undercarriage from the car.

4) Del Taco hit the spot. And the Del Taco outside Park City, UT is THE place to eat on a Thursday evening. The talent was strong at that fast food joint.

I've driven I-10, twice, when I'm out west. Each time I stopped in Lordsburg, NM, where there is a Mexican joint in a junk yard. Not just best mexican food, but the best food I've had, period.

5) I'm growing fond of the 1FZ-FE. 826 miles and it's a nice driving motor on the highway. Quiet. Can't complain. Only wheeled it about 10 miles and it did fine. But like @jonheld i think I will like my 3FE better on the trail.

If you check out the 100 series forum, there is a guy bitching and moaning about how rough running engine an 1FZ-FE is.

Back to tech...

I haven't advanced the timing. I'm a little hesitant to since it runs so well as it is. I may mess with it when I get home. I've never advance the timing on any of my 80s.

When I went through my pm in January, I did end up advancing my timing to about 6-7. It felt better going up hills and accelerating, even after test driving it with all the work I did.

I think some of the feeling may have been seat of the pants, but now that I have had some seat and pedal time with it advanced, I am going to dial it back to around stock and see if I notice a difference.

She experienced her first snow fall last night. And freezing temps.

She's leaking like a sieve. PO had 5w-30 in it. I added 10w-40 yesterday. Will add 15w-40 today and check every 50 or so miles.

It appears to be leaking from this 24mm bolt. Same type of bolt as the diffs. Anyone know what that is? Could I pull it and add a crush washer to it and fill up with oil again?

Or is it more likely the front pan arch seal and I just need to limp it home?

It's more likely that it's the oil pump cover that's leaking. It is the cover just above the plug you circled. That oil pump cover seal, the distributor o-ring, and the valve cover are your likely leak culprits on a 1FZ.
