I posted this in my clubs forum but I figured I would share it with you guys too:

I have no intention in turning it into a buggy! My plan is to bob 7" - 9" off the back and weld it back up. I also want to cut the rockers out and recess the sliders. The only other tube work will be a rear bumper and tube fenders.

This 80 has a 7" bob:

Great build thread. It would be nice if we had a place on Mud where all of the build threads like this were kept. We used to have rig of the week and then rig of the fortnight but now you simply have to keep track on your own.

I think you are probably one of the more agressive drivers on mud for the 80 series. The videos are great! While I am almost twice your age and have owned my 80 since 97, I haven't done nearly the degree of difficulty in wheeling you have done. I just started building up my rig for wheeling in the last year or so. The videos are actually instructional on what can be done with an 80. Very cool!

You guys that live in the Pacific Northwest are really lucky to live there. Everywhere you look is like a photo from a vacation picture album (yeah, I remember when people still kept those, in fact I still have a bunch of them. Now I keep my digital pictures on my external hard drive like everyone else)....and the wheeling looks awesome. Keep the pictures and videos coming. I think I could deal with the rain and cold to gain access to the hiking and wheeling.

Thanks, Jack! I would love for this build to move a bit faster but money and a 2 yr old keep that from happening... And I'm sure you guys don't want to see a picture every time it moves. That would get boring.

I do think that the PNW is the most amazing area to live/wheel. I really do love it here. Hopefully I will be able to build something that will be an insperation for everybody on here.
 
Well I had a heartbreaking night last night... The DS inner axle seal was leaking (again), so I decided to pull apart the front end to repack bearings and swap the birfs from side to side. In the process I realized why it was leaking. It looks like the housing is slightly bent. My plan was to swap out the Marlin Crawler inner seals for OEM (they have a bit more deflection and may be able to seal with the bent housing), throw it back together and wheel it until after the body and cage was done.

In the process, I decided to pull the 3rd member to clean the grease out of it and this is what I saw:

Now not only do I need a new housing, I need new 5.29's as well. Financially, I am at a point where I can't afford gears, set-up or a housing so I have no clue what to do. My eventual goal is to have the 80 on 40" tires one day, so I need to keep that in mind. After sleeping on it, these are the only options I see:

1) Clean everything and throw it back together. It wasn't making any noise and I had no idea the r&p were bad, so run it for now. This is the only way I will be on the trail at all this year unless money/parts drop into my lap. Doing this I can still wheel while I'm collecting parts and I there shouldn't be anything I can destroy that doesn't already need to be replaced.

2) Leave it torn apart and start searching for a housing and saving up for new gears. I already have Longfield inners/birfs and ARP studs, so this would be the least expensive route for a permentate fix. My concern is if the axle will hold up to 40" tires in the future.

3) Sell the good parts from my axles and start searching for 1-tons. If I choose this option, it would more than likely be a couple years before it is out of the shop because I would have to build those axles up and modify them to fit.

I need your guys opinion!
 
If you want to wheel, than as you said option 1 will work. Number 2 isnt bad and people have run 40s, just be gentle (you i doubt can do that). Option 3 is a whole nother world and would take you awhile. Theres a thread over in hardcore where someone uses one tons, search it and it will give you some insight into it. Good luck

I think I've figured out a game plan (now that I'm a lot less frusterated LOL). I think I'm going to clean everything and bolt it back together for now. I'm going to start collecting steel, gears, bearings, etc. Once I have everything, I will pull it all apart, straighten the axle, truss everything, replace the gears and throw it all back together.

After consulting with some experts, I think my gear failure was just a bad gear set. I already have Long's inners and outers and ARP studs so mechanically the axle is as strong as it gets. I will strengthen the housing with trusses and hopefully that will be the end of it. I will make sure to be detailed in this thread though!
 
You might have to figure out where the middle range of the throttle is now...

As if...well never mind.:rolleyes:

I would suggest a set of pickup hubs on hand (or just put em on now) at all times so you can drop that driveshaft and get home with a wad of steel where the diff used to be.
