This one arrived at the shop a few weeks ago direct from the seller in this Bring a Trailer auction

If you read through the Bring a Trailer listings you will see this one came off a sheep farm in California and was tastefully modified by someone that knows Toyotas in Colorado and was then sold by @overton … I’m not 100% sure what Overton does but he does sell a ton of Cruisers on BAT.

@Cal40 contacted me and asked if I would do my thing with it so he could enjoy it as a DD in Southern California while he is on shore tour in the Navy.

This thing has been sitting here about a month while I put the final touches of the Saudi Troopy and Rosie the 40. Both of those will be back here a short time before they are gone for good so I am getting the Ram45 started.

Sam and I spoke a few times. I sent videos and we came up with a game plan.

I sat down early last week and spent about $10,000 at the usual vendors and have parts coming in from the 4 corners of the country.

So today I started.

Here is the last photo of this truck ever with that hideous K&N filter setup. RIP

As mentioned earlier, this one was modified but really other than that air cleaner they did a great job. The 1971 F145 is certainly a great motor when replacing the F135. Much easier to modernize as is the plan

IMG_3901.jpeg

And those that follow my builds know I like to strip them down to the long block and have everything powdered and add new accessories all around to know when it leaves here everything I could touch got replaced or repaired

Before I unhooked the battery I went down the line #6 to #1 and confirmed this is a very solid F145. It felt good and sounded good and these compression numbers show it’s very healthy.

Cool sticker. Have never seen that one before

Not sure who made this booster kit back in the day. Man. That thing was a bitch to get off. Makes it SUPER crowded by the carb. I doubt it would even work with a linkage carb.

We are adding rear disc brakes and going full manual with an 80 series master like on my 45.
IMG_3908.jpeg

Getting there
IMG_3909.jpeg

Always pop the rear plug on these things if you don’t know the maintenance history. If that’s clogged up then you will always have cooling issues
IMG_3911.jpeg

One side down
IMG_3912.jpeg

Look at the heat shield they used for the oil filter lines
IMG_3913.jpeg

Popping the top you can tell this was a nice fresh motor. This goes great with the high compression numbers
IMG_3914.jpeg

There it is. Naked and not afraid.
IMG_3915.jpeg

This is the pile of parts headed to Powder Keg on Monday
IMG_3916.jpeg

Got the entire engine degreased and repainted. Nice and leak free it seems.
IMG_3930.jpeg

Valves were a tad loose so they got snugged up
IMG_3929.jpeg

Started putting the few parts that arrived last week on. Sniper sensor. Air cleaner bracket. Cleaned up the alternator
IMG_3932.jpeg

This side. Fuel pump plate. Toyota PCV and new gasket. Gear reduction starter. DUI distributor and live wires with new Denso plugs.
IMG_3933.jpeg

Ship notifications tomorrow for 5 UPS shipments.

Great going as always Nolen. If you're getting rid of the carb and it is usable I will be interested when you are selling off.

Nolan, super excited to see what you do with this one….it will be unreal I’m sure….

Took most of the day off from this yesterday. Had to go buy a new trailer. Get a new battery for this thing and spent some time organizing the parts that came in.

Today I started at noon because I delivered a 40 this morning.

Bolting stuff on.

We decided to squeeze a fan clutch setup into this one. Much quieter for sure. It and the fan are arriving tomorrow
IMG_3972.jpeg

Water cutoff from Toyota Matt
IMG_3973.jpeg

Tensioner from Matt as well
IMG_3974.jpeg

New mirror head
IMG_3975.jpeg

JTOutfitters adapter for 80 series master
IMG_3976.jpeg

Turn signals
IMG_3978.jpeg

Master installed

Got to work up a rod. The one that was in here was butchered for that booster kit
IMG_3977.jpeg

The Wizard came over and welded in these cool plates from SOR.

Is there a 45 left in this country you haven't worked on?

I am always a fan of vintage speed equipment! Not that it makes it any more horsepower, but it sure looks awesome!!

The new grill lights came in. I swapped in the old white lenses onto the new lights. The old ones had wires hanging off the back
IMG_4007.jpeg

While I was wiring them up I decided to go ahead and wire in the H4 light harness.

If you have the round light covers this is how I do it.

I add in a Male plug on the drivers side and then shorten that harness. You need a spare male plug. Coolerman has them.

IMG_4003.jpeg

Passenger side you can use the one that’s in the harness and attach it to the wires coming out of the light cover
IMG_4004.jpeg

Then where you cut out the male plug you use some of the wires you cut out of the extra loom and wire it into the fender junction
IMG_4005.jpeg

These early trucks did not come with a Fusable link so I get them from Coolerman and add them. Cut out a couple of scotch locks someone had installed for dissy and starter wires. I’ll loom those loose wires later

I was actually wondering the other day how to accomplish this, did the light upgrade on my '74 40 and really want to do it on the '67 45 but have the round covers.

Might look into that fusible link addition too.

Good stuff! 👍

I've probably missed it posted in the past, but where do you source your Distributors and plug wires?

Summit.

Davis Unified and Live Wires

@cruiseroutfit used to sell new white lenses but I did not need them…just the lights

This is the proper fan if you want to add a 2F water pump and fan clutch and keep the F style fan shroud.

IMG_4014.jpeg

This fan cleared without grinding but it was close so I took a little off the ends
IMG_4017.jpeg
IMG_4018.jpeg

I have about 1” between the front of the fan and the radiator
