Those are some awesome shots there Anthony. Are those fire lookout stations unique to Washington, or do they exist elsewhere also?

At their height, there was almost 5000 fire lookout stations through out the entire US. Obviously some areas have the majority of the lookouts. Those being Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and California due to the large amount of wilderness.

Unfortunately in the 50's and 60's some short-sided management at the USFS decided the lookouts were a nuisance and had most of them destroyed. There are however some that are still staffed each summer, and many other used in emergency efforts during large peak fire season.

Here is a great site I found that helps me locate lookouts to go explore. Please respect these lookouts and treat them like any other wilderness, leave them the same as you find them.

Forest Fire Lookout Association Home Page

I plan on next summer visiting and photographing as many as possible. I love amazing views, and these lookouts afford the best available that can be reached by vehicle.

Is this the same one we ventured to? Great photos Derek!

Yup that the one, with a lot less 4x4's though :) I must say I wasn't expecting to see all the people up there when we went.

Still had a great time!

My GF and I took the 100 down some forest service trails and then hiked the last mile to this fire lookout near Mt. Hood. Got a weird rattle coming back, but then it went away.

Funniest part, though, was how badass we thought we were, until on the way back we ended up following a guy in a Corolla who was throwing one wheel up on the berm every time he got to a point where he would have been high centered. Then 1/5th of the way back in we saw a Prius parked camping. Oregon Toyota drivers obviously are fearless.

It's really cool to see other people going up and finding these lookouts. The views from them are nothing short of spectacular!!! Do you know the name of that lookout? GPS cords?

I get this all the time driving forest service roads, it's from the gravel getting in all kinds of weird areas. If it disappears then it's nothing to worry about. Enjoy!

Awesome, thanks! I will put that one on the list to visit one day.

If you ever in the area and want to explore lookouts of FS roads let me know. I'm always down for an expedition.

Now that's a sweet looking rig, FJ62!!

I almost went with the full length rack, but didn't think the :princess: would approve.

BTW, is their a place where HAFB sells their surplus? I didn't see anything on their site.

Have fun in Moab. We're going down the next week it looks like.

Go to the Government Liquidation site and you can see what the DRMS at Hill AFB (and a load of other locations) has for sale.
