You might check if you guy is spelling sulfur correctly.

The paint was mixed by:

Try around, just because one paint supplier does not have the codes, others just might.

Thanks. If my guy doesnt come through I will call yours. What I found is that the PPG software had "some" colors, but not all. Ack. I will endeavor.

Oh, and I sat and searched every possible way I thought I could on his computer, including going through every yellow variation from toyota. Nada.

My color progress so far, whatcha think?

So I have sprayed out each of the three colors I have so far, with Sulfur Yellow being my desired end game. I show the others as they are straight out of the PPG computer. The PPG system had Fashion and Spring Green. Sulfur yellow is eluding me, but after some time at it I think I am pretty damned close.

Here is Destin's scan from the toyota color chip:

Whatcha think? It looks like it might be a tad bit dark, but not by much.

OK, here is a better pic taken with my SLR outside in daylight (not sunlight, cloudy). I think this looks better, and makes for a more accurate comparison with the rig sitting in the sun.

Oh, and how I got here. I photoshop'd a large image with pieces of the chart you sent. I then had the local photo shop print it and took it in to my paint shop. We then tweaked a little and this is what I have!

They matched a paint chip. Of course, not the original paint chip, but a printout of a digital copy of one. Problematic at best, but I love the results and can think of no more accurate solution. Couldn't find this paint color on anyones 'puter.

Hell, I may be the only Sulfur Yellow FJ40 that I know of when I am done....

NOT YET, buuuut, I bought the paint (ouch) and think I am within a week. The tub looks awesome.

Just got my soft top frame and top in the mail, yay!

I love the green in the photograph but you're only going to match that look exactly for about an hour a day. If you look at the length of the shadows in the photo, it was taken late in the day on a really bright day (typical photographer trick). The light has a yellowish/reddish cast to it. You might try looking at/shooting the paint chip some day at sunset.

That said, I think you've got the right color in Sulfur Yellow and it's a great choice.

Sorry you couldn't find an updated code...I looked as well for a modern day sulfur yellow...not for mine...I still couldn't find it

I know of at least 3 others who are serious about going Sulfur Yellow...those will be purist builds on early 40s, so you will be in good company

Unfortunately without a precise formula or an existing example to go on, I did the best I could. I already have a gallon of DCC single stage mixed up, so I am at the point of no return

What I do know, based on my spray out, is based on existing literature it looks DAMNED close and I love it! My build isn't purist, and honestly I don't know how you can say with any level of confidence at this point that you have THE perfect sulfur yellow. I am doing my best to recreate what I consider a "lost" color, and if others like the results they will have a known rig they can base their decisions on. Honestly, I only know of one sulfur yellow FJ in the world, it is in the picture on the tarmac (and I am smitten with it!), and maybe they destroyed the evidence after the photo shoot!


MAN I can't wait to get the tub sprayed!
