Explain that 2in reciever hitch thing to me REALLY SLOW!
THAT sounds like you have a good idea rollin around in that noggin of yours!
Ive been wrackin my brain trying to figure the best way to go about building the tire swingout, but havent thought anywhere near that direction.
I might have to steal that one!
So, you take the reciever, and weld it to the top of the swingout (where the plate and studs would be)?
How have you done it?

My 35's on steel rims is NOT what I call enjoyable lifting....just FYI!
Im all for an easier solution.

Thought you might like that idea.

When you make the 90 degree turn at the top of the upright to mount the tire plate to, what I am going to do is cut a hole in the tire mounting plate for the receiver tube to fit through. Then mount the plate where ever you need it for the tire to mount. Now you have another receiver to mount maybe a small basket to or maybe the hi-lift, etc. The other bonus is that when you lift the tire up onto the tire carrier, you don't have to try and hit the studs on the plate, now you can catch your breath, line up the wheel to the studs and only have to lift the tire the last little bit to slide it onto the studs.

I am not using a true receiver, just a piece of 2" inside diameter tube and will drill the pin holes. I don't need the re-enforcement for this receiver since it is an accessory mount and not a trailer mount, so it shouldn't be under that kind of stress.

Mine is far from being done. I mounted it back up so I could do my side protection and build the swingouts. The swingout arms were part of the kit. I didn't want or buy their tire carrier or can carrier, I have my own ideas about what I want. One of which is that I will have a 2" receiver sticking out of the center of the tire. I had one on my Jeep and realy liked it, again just makes it easy to add accessories at will, plus I can get the tire on the receiver and then put it on the studs to bolt it down. Unlike you, to me the tire is one heavy mofo, so I can't hold it up, line it up to the studs all in one fell swoop, I have to do it in stages.

I also have to figure out where I want the cans (two) and how I want to mount the hi-lift. So as you can see, lots left to do.:D

Shawn has a similar set-up in his spare tire, he has his Hi-Lift/ shovel/ ax mounted there.

I think I get what youre saying...
Youll have TWO tubes, one will fit inside the other, but the mounting plate will be welded on the outer tube, so you hike up the tire and catch it on the center hole of the rim....take a breather.... then find the studs. Correct?
So the accessory attachment will slot into the "mounting tube/ plate!

That is a SWEET IDEA if Im getting it right!

Looks to me like the IPOR mount has bolts for the highlift. For 90 bucks...I might just wuss out and do that one...

Then you could take the rim set off and on by removing the pin....Im kinda diggin that idea too, and it would be EASY to build, easy to catch the rim. tire etc.
The only problem with that would be the "SLOP" in the reciever.

You had it right in the first paragraph. The mounting plate will be welded to the tube and there will be a short section that protrudes through the center hole of the rim with the holes drilled for a regular hitch pin. That short section will be the extra "receiver" and will act as the tire "rest" when you first lift it up onto the carrier. Then it is just a matter of rotating the wheel to line up with the studs and a final small lift onto the studs.

On my Jeep, I had the hitch pin hole behind the tire/plate so that you had to open the swingout to take the pin out or put it in. I may or may not do that with this one, I wil have to see what works best.

Your second idea would have way too much slop for me.

what did you get quoted for the powder coat on you bumper?
I got a quote for a 140.00 PLUS powder. Seemed a bit steep, but I dont know too much about it.

They quoted me $164.00 out the door. I dropped it off Tuesday morning and she called me today right at 5:00 and said it was done. I won't be able to pick it up until Friday afternoon.

That was at Advanced Powdercoatings next to Metal Masters. I was happy with the price, I was expecting about another $100 on top of that.

I will let you know how it turned out. I can't wait to get it mounted up, so my 80 will be driveable again.

But thats coming from a Cali perspective.


I dont think NV cares about that stuff , isnt there a radioactive dump site over there somewhere? :)

That was just the bumper. I am not done with the swingouts, not even close. I didn't want to PC those anyway, easier to change my mind and change the design later on. Plus the swingouts won't see the gravel abuse that the bumper will. There were too many nooks and crannies for me to try and get paint into.

The PC came out really nice, the only problem is that with it being black it really shows my shoddy prep/grinding work.:D

I will try and get some pictures up.

Just as another update, I had a buddy here to help me unload it and get in on the cruiser and we weighed it the best we could with a bathroom scale. Our best guess with trying to balance it was about 125lbs.:eek:

That is without the uprights or swingouts.

That weight is not so bad , remember you hacked off a bunch of oe stuff to subtract to the total.

Always gota look on the bright side.

I've got it pieced back together, I just need the gasket that goes between the flare and the fender. So I will get that ordered tomorrow and it will be like new again. I still have it torn apart for now. I epoxied the broken pieces back onto the flare and they seem pretty solid, I am going to give them plenty of time to dry.

I fianlly got the rear bumper done. Here are some pictures.

Now that the bumper is done, I am just going to get my 2m radio installed (I have a place to mount the antenna now) and I'm going to call it good for a while. Time to use it.
