there is a sale and a deal going on at HF right now (but maybe regularly?) with their "Pro mechanics" tool set.

The set is a 301 piece set. The reviews are very good on it. (Reportedly the case has been improved over the pic, btw.) It's much less money than the equivalent Craftsman and it is said that it includes larger (up to 32mm) sockets that the equivalent Crftmans don't have. Seems like it has all the sockets you'd ever want or need, short of the 54mm and the like. 12 pts, 6 pts, short, deep etc.

What I like about it also is that the case is a much better style in my opinion than the similar craftsmans, a narrowish attache style rather than the boxy type that Crft uses for the bigger sets. So easier to stash in a vehicle and carry around. Plus it has flat inserts for sockets storage that can be used as is in a toolbox drawer. It also has a few other tools that the Crft don't typically have in their mechanics sets IIRC, like pliers and screwdrivers, so more self-contained,. One unknown is the hinge, I can't tell if it's been improved over the pic or not. I don't like these flex types that always end up breaking. But I could live with it and if breaks you could ask for a replacement. In fact the reviews mention that folks just buy this set, cut up the case and then use it as their primary set in their big tool box. I also suspect that the ratchets are probably not the fine toothed ones but I could live with that too if I didn't already have a ton of good ones. It also does not seem to have the high visibility markings on sockets that my old eyes prefer, but the markings on the tray should help and I use a fat permanent marker on mine anyway.

On sale for $189 instead of $250, but -get this- you can use an online coupon for 20% off also bringing it down to $150 or so, for a set that is better I think than the $300 craftsman, and close to 50lbs of steel.... (And throw in the usual free cheapo HF tool and low standard shipping.) Also lifetime warranty, but "limitations apply" per the web site, and I don't know what that means.

Not a bad deal and set to have around as a takealong one, I think, and you won't cry too much if lost or stolen.

added: I have had good luck with my HF sockets so far, including impact ones, but I do not know about the tolerances on those, i.e. if they are sloppier than more expensive ones, for example; or about the quality of the steel. Anybody knows in general? But for what it's worth, I measured one of my HF 17mm and a Craftsman 17 and both were the same, at 17.2mm (or a bit more than 1% over, not too bad, and you don't want it to be 17.00 anyway) between random faces. As far as material I have not yet had one be damaged, but then I can't say I abused them badly.

I would rather buy a quality tool even when it means spending little more money.

Let us know what you think of it. I've been thinking about something like that for travelling tools. I hate pulling stuff out of my toolbox every time I want a trail tool bag.

I'm thinking that having a fitted case in a friendly form factor is actually a pretty big deal. I have a ton of toolboxes and loose tools around, and when I fill up toolboxes with stuff, it's a mess, they may be hard to stash neatly in the truck because they are squarish and there is always the chance to forget the one wrench I might need. So having just about all necessary sockets, allen, screwdrivers, some pliers etc all in one neat package ready to go sounds pretty appealing. A thinnish case is easy to stash someplace easy to get to. Of course, I always take lots of tools with me on trips but I rarely if ever have had to use them...

That set dosn't look too bad at all . Looks like all the sockets are 6 point . The only thing that seems cheap looking/uncomfortable is the wrenches. Its also nice to be able to see what you left out/ under the hood/in the dirt before packing up your tools
I would go for it if I had the extra $$$

REVIEW

POOR CASE DESIGN ALERT!

OK, folks. Immediate feedback. The set arrived. I thought I should let you know right away cuz of some issues in case somebody else was thinking about it. First impressions:

- the tools look fine at first glance. Super collection of sockets for sure. This 32mm 6pt and the like are pretty impressive. Also the huge Allen and star sockets. Cool. The ratchets look decent. I'm counting about 52 clicks per turn. Not the highest count but more than my Craftsmans. Don't know about strength yet.

- the form factor is great, the case looks like a fat attache, like a smallish carry-on bag.

- The case is intended to be an improvement over the one pictured on their site in that it now has metal latches and decent looking pin hinges rather than bending plastic latches and hinges likely to break after some usage.
HOWEVER, these fairly strong metal latches are connected to a flimsy plastic part of the case, and the latter arrived cracked on both sides when brand new out of the box. Also, there is one part of a tray that holds all the screwdriver and allen sockets that is covered by a clear "lid" that looks likely to break sooner rather than later, which would result in sockets flying everywhere. Some of the tools are also not held in place very securely.

(I will also mention that a couple of minor items ordered (not connected to the tool set) arrived broken and one missing.) Not a great day for ordering from HF.

I'm currently on hold with India. The customer service folks are OK, if very slow (probably at least 15mins already). I've asked for a replacement case which they said they would send but frankly I think it won't make any difference. As soon as that thing is latched tight with some stress on it, or subjected to bouncing around it'll break again, I think. Probably broke already because the set is packed with foam and cardboard to hold things in place, and it was likely a bit too thick which caused the latches to crack the case, but that's a guess. I will report on whether the replacement case will do the trick or not. If not, I may well return the whole thing, all 50 lbs of it, as I really wanted a decent case. Of course, one could put a strap around the whole thing and hope for the best, but that's a bit silly. I think overall the case is just too weak for the heavy load it carries. When I lift it up by the handle, I can see the front deforming. Good idea, poor execution IOW.

Conclusion: DO NOT BUY if you want a strong case. The tools appear OK if not great (more later) but the case is not sturdy enough for travel IMO. Now, if you plan to put the tools in your big box at home then no problem. I think the price is certainly low enough already for the tools alone.

So, I bet and I lost... Oh well, win some, lose some.

well, here are the latest thoughts on this:

the case issue is not a completely drop dead issue. A ratchet strap around the case takes care of that nicely. And I have a contractor tool bag from a cordless set that fits just right around it. So I can live with that fine.

OTOH, I find that the weight of the thing is a distraction. It's about 50 lbs and is pretty unwieldy. And it does take a good chunk of space. Basically, I think it's a bit big for a routine toolbox to be taken on normal trips. Sure you have all the sockets you possibly could ever need in the below 32mm range, but that also means too many. For one thing, half the sockets are SAE, not too useful for Toyotas. I would think there might be a smaller size took kit out there that would be more suitable for regular use.

So for a quick weekend trip nearby it might be too much. But for a long trip really out there with a less than perfect truck, and if you have the room, you'd be all set.

This is what I take on trips. It's perfect for me. I usually take out the smaller sockets I don't need before a trip. I like the ratchets. Pretty good quality. I've stuck some of the sockets on my aircat with no problems.

neat, it does also have both SAE and metric, I see. I do find myself using a few SAE tools around the cruiser, actually, but just the odd nuts for mods and sometimes trailer parts. But as you say, easily removed anyway.
It's hard to resist taking a lot of tools around when you're a gearhead but one can go overboard...

I picked up a kit today with the 25% off coupon. Too many good reviews not to at that price.
