Not really, it feels more like you call it "TECH" to circumvent @woody advertising rules down here. I'd like to see you offer some real tech in some of these threads and help these guys that like to do this stuff themselves and just need a few pointers "tech" to be able to be successful.

- i did not post the above to advertise ....

- its pure TECH on the rear window switch , find me a better step by step example , Yes that's a Dare !,

Matt,
I’m not trying to prevent you from making a living and I do wish you luck and hope you have a long successful career.

With that said every one of your post down here feels like an ALL CAPS bold letter infomercial pimping your services and products, a little of that goes a long ways and to say you are not trying to be clever with your “TECH” post is disingenuous. I know several down here feel your enthusiasm for your products lead you to overstate there worth or performance but I’ll leave that fight to them, me personally I’d like to see you interact with the 55 guy’s and offer some real tech advise like use ultra-fine grit paper to polish those contacts and a little dielectric grease goes a long way so don’t overdo it.

i will add words to each step , in the next few days as time permits

You had mentioned taking it apart in a plastic bag, what's the reason for that?

generally all the internal parts of all TOYOTA lock key cylinders and key switches are under a constant form of spring tension , keeps them all plumb level and square inside ...

when you go past the dissemble point of no return , its nice to have ALL guts in one safe , neat , clear plastic bag place

kinda like this below

the 60 series push button lift hatch lock cylinder is the most dangerous one i have seen , i could loose a eye or worse ?

so be ready for this is the wa

I think you can do this. 👍
You are 100% correct but I'm not down here in the sty pretending I'm making "TECH" threads for the common good and just posting look at what I can do pictures & videos and charging people for my service.

Matt said he would make an attempt at turning these facades into actual tech to help the guys down here and I’m hoping he makes good on that.

Me personally I don’t like Matt’s post, they completely ball up reading the forum on a cell phone with his all Capps bold extra-large font but if he actually brought value down here then I would ignore him.

We had a good thing down here before Matt and I wish he would make more of an attempt to blend in or just go away.

you know ?

for a moment here earlier today , i actually gave serious thought to PM'ing you
J Mack , because something inside me was telling me , that this recent positive smiles on your Avatar communication , and general genuine interest in the valuable TECH. i do take away something positive when i do have time to share what i can these days ... translated that i was sure you either have a FJ55 FJ56 BJ56 Lock Cylinder , Key Switch , and or Keys them selves , need , want , must-do or must-have on your mind pretty solid .........?

i started punching the key board to reach out to you in PM , then a incoming Tech . call came in hard , and never finished getting to start a new conversation with you .......

if i did , ? would have simply asked you , if you needed any help with your 55 ./ 56 locks or keys ...:) ,.....simple

- well , well ,,,

J mack , do you actually think , that some how i need to spend 1 moment of my all ready spread thin Holiday Parts Season time selling myself or what ever it is you actually think i do : " pretending I'm making "TECH" threads for the common good and just posting look at what I can do pictures & videos and charging people for my service. " ?

- i am at the fundamental core roots level , trying hard to document what i can , and choose to share , in the Niche FJ55 areas of study & specialty , for the future FJ55 / 56 owner operators . because it's my way of paying forward , and utilizing what TOYOTA gave me growing up , i am dam lucky i do have something kool to pay forward with , and if you take issue with it , or the way its paid-out , then why are you here soaking it all up ?

Yes I do but maybe we should start over before things get typed or read out of context.

Matt I do believe you think you are doing cool nerdy Toyota stuff and that everybody is as enthusiastic about it as you are. I’m going to tell you that most of these guys down here are the get a spare key made at the Home Depot type but occasionally we see a guy that wants all OE locks and keys or has a very specific Toyota lock related issue and you would be the first person most of us would mention to seek out for help. I fall into the Home Depot category and if the key works then it’s a good key regardless of the color or originality of it but I can still appreciate what you do.

We have had a very quiet and always helpful little section down here in the sty and most of these guys share parts and knowledge at zero cost to each other to keep these old Toyotas on the road, it feels like you come down here with a bullhorn in your “TECH” threads screaming HEY LOOK AT ME I HAVE PARTS AND SERVICE FOR SALE and for me and it kind of takes away from that hanging out at the coffee shop with your buddies every morning telling the same joke and catching up feel like we have down here.

In the time it took during your busy holiday season to type and find pictures in that reply to me above you could have prepared a meaningful “TECH” article with pictures and descriptions and this is the truly baffling thing to me. All I’ve ever asked of you in the past is provide some helpful tech in your tech threads like products and techniques to accomplish the task then you’ll spend the time to reply with that long winded wall of text and pictures but refuse to take the time to add any real value to our area.

So I’ll go first and try to add some tech to your tech thread, please feel free to jump in and correct any information I’ve provided it it’s wrong.

I wouldn't mind an attempt at rebuilding one of my spares. 👍
Lets do it buddy, please post pictures of your process.
First like Matt mentioned if you're not sure taking a switch apart in a closed plastic bag is a good idea to catch all the springamathings.

Now once you get it apart you'll see some contacts the silver things in this photo, we are dealing with DC voltage so these contacts are prone to pitting from the arc. That pitting reduces the surface area of the mating faces and or the arc produces sulfidation on the contact face itself both of which we need to remove. If you look at Matt’s picture we want to do things a little different than he did here, we want to try to keep our contact points flat and true as possible to maintain maximum contact surface area. My preference is to use light grit sand paper stuck to a flat surface (I have a surface plate) but really any flat surface will work, start with 400 grit if you have deep pitting and move to 600 after that. I will also polish the contact surfaces, I use Mothers or Simichrome on a Q-tip and try to get some sort of a shine, rough faces will arc more and pit sooner than smooth faces so worth the little effort here. I would reassemble and rub the contacts together at this point and look at the faces to try to get an idea of the “contact patch” and make any small tweaks to improve it where I can. Once everything looks good I like to apply a little dielectric grease on a Q-tip to all the surfaces to help provide a little lubrication and help with arc jump on final assembly.

One thing I will note is Matt suggest using red Loctite on the screws of the switch in the video to fix a problem with the threads or something like that, I would avoid this and either fix the threads by going to a slightly larger size or using another method that would let you re-inter the switch at a later date should the need arise. Blue Loctite on small screws, if you use red plan on drilling them out or using heat to remove them.

You had mentioned taking it apart in a plastic bag, what's the reason for that?
Prob the same reason I should have taken my lock-out dials apart in a bag.
Small parts, lock cylinders have little springs that like to deploy when freed after 40+ years.
You hear this little noise, think "WTF was that?" and then you look down and realize you are missing parts...

Any chance you could make this video with your kool assistant?

Big Yellow here is a 1/79 FJ55LG-KA usa-spec ...
she was the first FJ55 i had personally ever driven and only the 2nd one i had the opportunity to touch the metal with my hands ...

- started being her full time caretaker , and long term parking , covered storage about 10ish years ago for the Female Owner Operator and her dude ...

it was like being a Peir-Boy , make sure it always is full on gas and will start on a dime , so they could stop by any time 24/7/365 and take Big Yellow out into the open world ......

-
the first one was locked in a over grown pine meadow in the upper lakes area of MAINE , i was 15 and on my Scout Troops High Adventure trip in canoes into the back country for 10 days , it was army green and i had just been bestowed my 12/78 FJ40LV-KCJA from mom and dad days before leaving for MAINE ..

- this is how and when i entered the FJ55 world , and it fueled my passionate enthusiasm for vintage TOYOTA Land Cruisers into a new cosmic energy refresh and reset , i still recall clearly like it was yesterday ...
- i have 2 fellow mud Members and TLCA folks , who own more then several FJ55's as neighbors next town over too ...

- its gonna be interesting when time permits , i can comb through the some-what recent mid-sized cache of NOS FJ55 1967-8/80 RH and LH side door lock and key sets 69051-60010/ 90351 , 69052-60010/ 90351 that found me late in the summer , i wonder if the MUD server and digital hard drive will skip a few times or perhaps crash ?

Well, just for fun I took apart one of my spares. She's pretty corroded inside and the contacts look like a set of old points, pitted, etc. Nothing flew around the room, at least at this point of tear down. I'm going to clean it up a bit, grease it and rebuild. Wires look fine for my purposes, so not going there. Not much to them really, but glad I seen for myself those contact pads.

Finally got back on this and I'm no Toyota tech, but muddled through it. Now I have to do the switch in the Mud Hen.

I want to thank Matt for posting this, I never would of thought to take one apart. Now that I did, any of you guys can do this, just to clean up those contacts. Easy!
