I finally took the time and tore into the dash yesterday. I had to replace the "D" light (yes, like everyone else, my drive light was out) and one of the cluster lights. Well, I got it all back together and low and behold, I FORGOT that the O/D light was out.

Advice I would give to anyone getting ready to take the dash apart, just replace all those little bulbs all at one time while your in there. Its not a fun job to take everything apart, twice (going to be a third time as soon as the wife stops shaking her head at me!)

If you have any pics and a write up on how you proceeded that would be very helpfull to those of us with the same problem but less courage to tear into the dash. I've been messing with the lower valance below the steering because my steering column cover was buggered but the upper parts just scares me. I'd hate to get in farther than my ability to get out.
Help me mr. wizzard.

Raventai provided an excellant write-up of the instrument cluster removal in his factory temp gauge mod thread.

Hey there, actually I did not take any pictures............I know, lame of me! But really, its not that its hard, its actually easy taking the screws and unplugging all switches and whatnot. The hard part is trying to get your hand behind the cluster to undue the connections. Its just time consuming and kind of a pain in the ass just for a little bulb. On a scale of 1 to 10, and 10 being the hardest, this job is a 4. Just remember, its time consuming. Dont freak once you get your dash torn apart, its only screws and some buttons to plug back in. You can do it, just set some time aside.

Where is the O/D light? I am guessing mine must be out too because i have NEVER even seen it!

Below the PRNDL between the Tach and Speedo...it only lights up when you take the O/D off. If you never take O/D off you won't see it....it you take it off...little orage light says O/D off.

Thanks, i guess it needs replacing because i have switched the O/D off and on and have never seen it!

Thanks

Mine worked fine before I replaced my D light...through taking everything apart and putting it back together I lost O/D light, L gear light, and hazzard light. Make sure you have extra bulbs...and test them before buttoning everything back up.

Curious.. I know the lights going out have usually been the problem.. but has anyone had the switch/switches at the shifter that controls those lights go out. Or at least need to be taken apart and contacts cleaned. I'm just wondering because I thought I changed all the bulbs when I first got the rig, but now the D and 2 lights are occasionally out. Beating on the dash doesn't seem to help.

I assume the switch for this is under the LC on the tranny or can you get to it from under the console?

GBell....

My "D" is out at both the shifter and the dash -- haven't broken into either of them yet....write up the steps when you get the one on the shifter complete!!!

My "D" light on the dash was out as well. A well placed wallop on top of the dash brought it back on. I was amazed. I had read in a thread that this was one way to fix the "D" light when it went out. I would not have believed it if it hadn't worked for me.

Excellent. Funny thing is, when I picked up my 93, on the test drive the OD light was working and as soon as we signed the papers and left the dang thing was out.

It's important to make sure the "O/D OFF" light works as it is also a transmission trouble indicator. It will flash if there is a tranny issue and you use it to pull codes to troubleshoot.
