Pretty cool Facebook memory for me. Hard to believe this was 7 years ago, seems like yesterday. Backing down at the weigh station with hundreds if not thousands cheering and onlooking was bucket list for sure!

Where the magic happens:

The magic: 23lb blue catfish. Released to catch another day. Caught on a 4" chunk of bluegill on a 7' inshore rod with a Penn 3500 reel using 10lb test with a 30lb flouro leader and 7/0 circle hook. I had forgotten to respool it with 17lb mono or heavier braid. Maybe tomorrow... Also, I need a bigger net.

LMK when you're inviting us all down there to kayak/fish/powerboat/powerdrink... damn fat fish!

Disappointed that it wasn't a pic of the bedroom.....sheesh, what a buildup/letdown.
Wow. Being so close to the water that I could fish out of the window would be sweet. Like the ice fishing house this winter was pretty cool. I’m now thinking of an old Led Zeppelin pic where Bonham is fishing out of the hotel window in Europe somewhere! Pretty sure that one goes with the story they recounted about how groupies would do anything, even get slapped with a live fish!

Oh, to your point…why are you so curious about my bedroom shenanigans??? Maybe I’ll pm you some pics but prepare to be underwhelmed; they’re pretty much just pics of Sarah, or our guests, sleeping.

Headed to Hatteras from 11/11 to 11/16. Any of you guys going to be out there? We usually fish at Ramp 55.

Thought I would start a thread for those that fish to post up pics and talk about fishing. Fishing is probably the one thing that I have consistently done for years and never burnt myself out on. Freshwater, saltwater, rivers or ponds it doesn't matter I would call it my one true passion. So let's see some pics, old or new it doesn't matter. Here's one from a couple of weeks ago from a river in Virginia I've been wade fishing a lot lately. 18" Brown Trout

LOL That pic was from 2016 so I’ll have you know I was 3 times as old as 12 in that pic!! Some people look younger than their age, some look older. The only thing I can say for certain about myself is that I’m one dang ugly fella no matter what age I’m at!

Stopped on way home from work in VA last night to test my luck and landed this brown. Am way behind on water time this year so was a welcome change of pace.

what would you gents recommend for a rod/reel starter set for my son? I don't want to buy a walmart special that will fall apart before our first day is over, but also don't want to go the other way either. Value is what I'm seeking (if possible). Thanks for your time.

I dunno. That fish above was caught on a Wally World combo special. Shakespeare 5-5” rod and cirrus reel. Was an I’m out of town and want to fish deal but for under $50 it’s not been bad at all. Upgraded reel is waiting in the wings but has lasted a few years so far, not babied and not failed. It’s my travelling don’t worry too much about it go to choice as of late. Go with a good brand name.

What type of fishing? Lake, stream (sm/lg?)

I bet half of us grew up with a zebco 33 thumb button real.

Age? Can he handle a spinning reel? More versatile and forgiving than open face baitcaster setup.

Shimano and abu Garcia still good stuff,
Diawa seems to have grown to have huge spread between their beginner entry and quality gear.

@gasman4u Yep, what Jason said - how old, what kind of fishing (freshwater, salt, bank or boat). Do you fish, or are you going to? Walmart actually sells some great stuff for beginners…the quality of Zebco and some others is just dandy for getting started and has done well by generations of folks. Tell us how you want to fish and what for. We’ll make sure you don’t get in over your head.

Speaking of fishing - I made it to the lake today. Decided to try using pieces of raw chicken breast marinated in strawberry jello just so I wouldn’t have to spend time in the afternoon sun catching bait. I’d heard of some folks claiming it works.

It does. That one is 30” and 14lbs. I got 8 or 9 blue cats total between 2 and 14 lbs. Ended the night with my first double since buying this place: 3lbs and 6lbs. Nighttime pics of fish I release, while solo, is too damn hard so that’s all I bothered to get.

@jfz80 @JohnVee Thanks for the quick replies. At this point, all fishing will be done from the bank/beach and maybe on a lake sporadically. The young ones are 6/8 years old. I've heard of all those brands except Diawa.

I remember having an old school Zebco push button when I was younger. Too bad I can't use that anymore to take them out.

Is the Zebco spincast the most versatile reel for the locations and group I'm describing? Thanks again.

I take it to mean bank = lake, and beach = ocean, and "on a lake" = lake from a boat of some sort. Ocean changes everything, so I won't waste time writing about that unless you request it.

Just get a spin cast combo (rod & reel). Anything Zebco or Shakespeare will be fine. A couple extra bucks might get you a slightly better reel, but you'd be better off buying the reel and rod separately(maybe $60-70 total) if you want a noticeable upgrade over a $20-40 combo. The kids will probably find a way to destroy it in a year anyway. Even at the lower price range, it'll last as long as they treat it with some respect.

I'd highly suggest getting it at a place like Cabela's or Bass Pro Shops where they can remove and replace the line that comes on the reel because odds are it's been on there long enough to be tightly coiled, making it form tight loops in any amount of slack line when cast. You'll thank me for that tip later. Ask them for 8lb test line; it'll be a free service or very inexpensive.

As new fishermen at 6 and 8 years old, consider rods that are no more than about 4'-5' long. Think of the length of the rod as the radius of catastrophic damage as they learn to cast.

Get some tackle. A prepackaged beginners kit will probably fine. You'll get some hooks (probably sizes 8, 6, 4), some splitshot weights, some snap swivels, and some bobbers. It's all stuff you can use for live bait or packaged bait for the usual bank-catchable fish - bluegills (bream), trout, bass, catfish, etc. Buy it separately if you can't find a kit. Sometimes you can find a combo that includes a tackle kit.

Have a knife you can cut worms with because you don't need a whole nightcrawler to catch a 5" bluegill! A small pair of hemostats is cheap ($5) and can be used to remove hooks if it's hooked stubbornly.

If you have room in your yard, teach them to cast before going to the lake. Just tie on a small weight (you can buy rubber practice weights if you want) and remember that a spincast reel doesn't release line until you RELEASE the button (hold it down before and up to the point in your swing when you want the line to leave the reel).

Learn how to tie a Fisherman's Knot (it's easy). Regular old square knots will just loosen up and come undone, or they can cause the line to snap in a hard tug...but they're better than nothing if it's all you got.

How many here grew up fishing with one of these?? Had one in the mid 70's fishing for Brim & Bass in Miami....
