could that be because it's cold in Chicago right now?

I take it you didn't tell them what you wanted put in?

anyway, what did you tell them you wanted done?

I had a number of other things that needed to be done and it slipped my mind....$1,700 worth. I caught it on the receipt. Yes, it's freezing. Car is in a garage overnight and outside during the day.

Drain a quart or 2 and add some 40 or 50 weight and you'll have your viscosity back to a 30 weight. 20 will harm your bearings, etc.. at normal temps.

At normal op. temps or climate? I live in the city in a building and cant just do that, I'll bring it back to the dealer and have them put in my own M1.

When running, the internal temp should be constant regardless of season. The cooling system is still reducing the engine temp.

You may want to ask them what they actually put in. It could actually be that the description in their parts list is wrong.

Do we think a 50 mile commute tomorrow would do anything negative? I'm an OCD engineer.

This isnt the first "designed for 5W-30" engine that Toyota now puts 0W-20 in...early V6 FJ's and 4R's and late model 200's.

You'll be fine but why drive 50 miles to drain 2 qts of oil?

Newer engines have the 5w20 designed into the tolerances

I need to leave for work at 5;00AM and it is a 50 mile commute. I live next door to the Toyota dealer where I will bring it after work to have them put 5W-30 in.

Went to the dealer and had them put 5w30 in. I know piston slap is normal but there was an abnormal amount of it this morning with the 0w20 oil. I might have been hearing things but I might have heard some knocking too.

I have seen that chart before... it does not make sense for one reason...
There is no reason Toyota would say it's okay to run 5w-20 and not ok to run 0w-20.

For that reason alone, I think that chart is a fake, but I would be interested to hear from Mr. T otherwise.

Turns out Toyota thinks it doesn't need oil.

You try, let us know your results

EDIT: Quick anecdote: My dad had a friend that ran a 22R-E on only vegetable oil (and gas obviously) for at least 5 years. I saw it every week growing up and it always ran fine.

Suggest you tell them to use the oil described on the fill cap. 5w30. Drain and replace.

^^ Tru dat!

There really isn't a reason to change the oil until the vehicle's next scheduled change.
