Understand the Prius gets varying MPG depending on the season. I was getting 55mpg during the summer and 47mpg last Winter. Has to do with battery efficiency, getting the engine up to temperature, and using the heater and headlights.

Swimmin in my wake, Dave.......thanks for rubbing it in that I am cruiserless.

I do like the interior of the new ones with the extra space under the console by your feet. Mine's a 2007 and definitely has lots of interesting gadgets and system monitors. 2.9% financing on a used car was too good to pass up

Just riding your coat tails :)

We looked at a used one, as well as a used RAV4, both certified (2.9%), but ultimately couldn't pass up the 0% on new Hybrids.

They still couldn't pay me to drive one of those junk wagons.
The extra collision insurance MA makes you have for a car with a note pretty much negates any per mileage savings.

The problem I see with all those hybrids are the batteries are hazardous to the environment. Imagine all the hybrids in the junk yard 20 years from now.

The materials in the batteries are valuable and recyclable to a point.

That being said, I'm not suddenly a hybrid evangelizer, I know they aren't magic. :) I just wanted a reliable car with maximum MPG for a good price that my wife could commute in. A few of her friends have these and rave about them to her, they are very popular in our area. It's a good choice for her.

If I were doing all the driving again, like we did the last 10 years, I'm not sure it's what I would have chosen, but I work from home now so I didn't want to force my choice on her. She's really happy with this, and she's never enthusiastic about any car we've had, so that's good enough for me.

They must be slow. Getting on an onramp and merging with highway speeds must be a real chore. Nothing like a v8 under your right foot. You'll probably miss your 4skinna. I remember when you got it. You were so excited. Oh well.

I don't see what's to rave about. Other than the gas mileage. But that's it.

I couldn't care less about the environment, carbon footprint, emissions, or saving the planet. My purchase was strictly a financial move due to the huge number of miles I'll be driving and my small wallet due to my new business.

I will miss the 4Runner, I loved that truck, but I couldn't afford it anymore so it has to go, that's the sacrifice of starting my own business (and it's not the only 1). Beyond the gas mileage I had a loan on it (probably a mistake) and the total costs just weren't affordable anymore.

The Prius is really no slower or difficult to merge to highway speeds in then any other small 4cyl car. But it's primary focus is overal gas mileage.

It's not "exciting," but, as a "car guy" I think it's curious and interesting and it's something new in the garage and I'll happily enjoy that.
At the end of the day, it's my wife's commuter and she's looking forward to it.

Yeah I understand what your saying. For me I don't care how high gas prices go I'll still own a cruiser. It's in my blood.
It's nice though you can go to work in your pajamas. Don't have to deal with the rush of daily commute.

How noisy are these? What's it do when you floor it?

Both my parents drive Prius-es. Not bad little cars. I'm too big to drive one but the one time I borrowed one of theirs it was fun. Wiered when the motor shuts off at stop lights or when creeping along in electric mode. On the Hi-way it's burning gas like everyone else.

What I find funny is that I drive a twenty five mile stretch of I-95 most days and I can't tell you the number of times I get passed by a Prius like I'm standing still. I'm cruising at about 60 - 65 mph and can see one coming up behind me weaving in and out of traffic, then it blows by me with the "I'm Electric" plastered in the back window. Way to lower that carbon foot print my-man!

.

Wouldn't an economical 4 banger make more sense? Since you are burning gas anyways?

Yeah, she wasn't interested in any of the lower end 4cyl cars. (Yaris, Cobalt, Elantra, Versa) She still wanted something that fit her definition of "nice" while delivering serious MPG, this does that for her. If mama's happy, everybody's happy. :)

I've probably done enough "defending" of my wife's choice here, it's not for everyone, and I never claimed it was, so I'll shut up now.

well if you are out buying new cars for financial reasons and then throw in that it has to be "nice" which means a $7000.00 bump in cost, which represents a substantial amount of gas. How bad is your situation?

You're better off not trying to justify the purchase and leave it at we just wanted the car.

I've bought plenty of cars that didn't make sense, cars can be an emotional purchase. Trying to justify them as practical doesn't always ring true.

If mama's happy, everybody's happy. :)

I originally missed this but we talked about this today when the Mainiacs came by.

Mama is only temporarily happy and trying to sustain her happiness is like a jail sentence. Long, grueling and emasculating!

I realized this after many years of marriage. I took 4 steps back, drew a line in the sand and will never cross it. She learned to be happy all on her own.
