The 64 project begins, carb i.d. And steering column questions

I wanted to convert my 1962 back to 3 on the tree, so sticking with the one piece steering column and gear box was key. The early ones were 2 bolts, not sure what year but the later ones are 4 bolts. So you need the correct pedestal.

Fist picture is what came on mine, had been all cut up, welded and all sorts of problems. You can see the two bolts.

second picture is the new pedestal that has the 4 bolts, bought it off the classifieds here with the column and most parts needed for 3 on the tree. Got the rest I needed from a different user here on mud.

third picture is of the new one (late 1960's) installed.

Hard part was drilling out the riviets and pounding them out to get the old one off, the rest was straight forward bold on replacement. Make sure you use the correct strongest bolts you can buy.

I will try and take a better look at mine to see what I am dealing with. I will also give Mark a call. Before I bought this I was wanting to pay Mark for a rebuilt carb, but now I have this 2bbl rochester and not sure what to do. But now I will give him a call about a possible steering column that could work for this. Thanks for the pictures and advice of your install, that really helps.

You cannot go wrong talking to Mark that is for sure, knowing what you have is key, all these old rigs have had so many changes done, parts swapped very few have all the original stuff by now.
 
On cutting the pillar, I think it is something that is commonly done, but it would be a shame for any more to be cut that way :frown:

If you don't like it you can always buy a later rig that doesn't have that. sticking up. These early rigs aren't getting any easier to find in unmolested condition :frown:
 
Send an IM to Coolerman about your wiring harness. He has all the supplies you need to either repair or replace what you have. He is also able to build you a new one by using the old one as a template. Super nice guy to deal with. Has a real job that keeps him pretty busy, so be patient with IM and email.

Thanks for the coolerman tip. Fortunately I have spent a lot of time on ih8mud and coolerman has been contacted and has given me some advice. He basically said I could trouble shoot my harness and he would supply parts, or he could repair mine, or build me a new one. So I will be in touch with him for sure.

I didn't get time tonight to put the new battery cable on and jump start it. But I will try tomorrow. And Mark and a few others have offered advice on steering columns. So hopefully I can get this thing back to being a respectable cruiser that drives. I cut out a metal piece to patch the hole in the dash sometime. Hopefully that works and looks cleaner than the chop job. I will loose the factory ridges, but there won't be the whole.
 
I have had great success with this stuff, Elmer's all purpose epoxy, I get it from Lowe's

It is a 50/50 mix very creamy but stiff enough to shape. Cures like plastic but sands easy. Then just take a plastic spreader and cut out a groove that matches the factory ridge and form some new ones. If you take your time you can make it look like factory ridges all the way across. I did this to put back some factory ridges in my jeep floor where I cut and patched holes and turned out good and has held up well, so not doubt it would work on the dash.
 
Thanks for the idea and tip for the Elmer's epoxy to build up the ridges. I might try that if I don't like the flat patch.

An update (for those subscribed) I GOT IT RUNNING! Coolerman sent me a simple diagram of how to wire my starter and coil without going through my ignition and fuse panel. The wiring is so hacked up with this that I couldn't get spark going through the ignition. So I made the system coolerman suggested to try starting it and it worked great. I finally know this fj40 runs. So now onto fuel supply. I need to add some more gas to the tank and see if it will flow with the fuel pump to the carb on its own (my friend was supplying the fuel into the carb).

If I can get fuel supply then I will make a throttle cable to the gas pedal.

The small list of things to do (sarcastic)
Get clutch master cylinder rebuilt. It is leaking down the floor board under the gauge cluster.
Get brakes bled (they feel pretty good from the pedal, but need to bleed them I a sure.)
Get front seats installed and seat belts
Get rear brake lights working (I hacked off the trailer lights and 6" tube bumper). Trying to make one that looks factory.


Has anyone tried using a long rear jump seat and turned it sideways for a forward facing back seat (a little more safe for car seats). I have rear jump seat frames that just need reupholstered.

steering box pics, curious what collumn and wheel will work

Here is a pic of my steering box. I am wanting just an early model turn signal switch, and early model steering wheel and put it on top of this factory column. But a few people have offered other models of steering wheels and columns. Can anyone tell me what year columns and wheels are compatible with this steering box?

Carb question?


Here is a picture of an unconnected vacuum line (I assume). I have tried searching and looking for some pictures and explanations of fj40 vacuum lines, but can find an answer.

Can someone tell me if this would be connected, and if so where? Thanks.

The tube coming out from under the carb is for the PCV hose. The other end is either the valve screwed in to the oil filler tube next to the fuel pump( for your stated model year), or to the valve attached to the side cover(match for your manifold setup). My condolences on the carb.

Thanks Mark. I do I have a PCV hose ready to connect for the large hole. But the small one I can't figure out...coming out of the intake manifold. If this thing can get moving and other moving parts" work", I will definitely be purchasing another carburetor, and maybe intake also. But I can't put any more money into this thing until I get it moving around the block....which hopefully is this weekend.

Current situation: Choke cable is now installed along with a poor mans throttle cable.
Stripped and repainted the drivers seat frame, and I have some foam to try a little upholstery.
I have a new clutch master and slave to put on and new plug wires this weekend.
Still need to find a radiator tube drain plug...the 2f spark plug leaks that is in it now but at least I know the threads and size to buy.
Need to buy a new steering wheel and redo the wiring!!!!!!

Mark (and others)...I wish I could just pay you and watch and learn how to work on a cruiser, but not enough money so I get to read ALOT on here and try things myself.

Update on my 62 fj for anybody following

I applied for a title and received the title yesterday. I was struggling to get the fj40 in gear and moving. I kept adjusting the slave and master cylinder for the clutch. Then I messed with the transfer case lever and....I felt a click and realized I must have had the TC in neutral. So, I reversed it out of the garage and got it into the street and couldn't move it forward hardly at all. My friend suggested I was missing first gear and I was in third. I went out and messed around some more, and I grounded it into first gear and took it around the block!!!!! It was smoking quite a bit which I didn't like but I figured it was from a bad oil gauge line that I need to fix.

Today I adjusted the clutch pedal and it didn't grind going into first gear, it didn't smoke and it took me around the block again! So now to get brake lights rigged up while I am tackling the bumper, tail lights and the wiring.

This thing is coming along!

I made some new side steps that I will be painting tomorrow, but installing side steps isn't going to make it street legal. I just wanted to make some.

Hopefully I can pull the wiring and get some new grease and oil in this thing.

I am taking my 64 in to do an axle swap engine swap and steering swap it will be next week I will have a mess of part all in working condition all original soon. PM me i am in AZ but know a good shipping company that is cheap. Let me know
 
BTW I am doing a frame off resto and I already have alot of the research for your body work and so forth let me know if I can help

Every little step makes me feel better, but they seem to not be so little. I cut out all the rust in the rear sill the last couple days and cut out the old rear frame member. I got the front bumper removed too. So now to get the front bumper holes drilled.

I am trying to order an old original steering wheel.

I ordered some gray marine grade vinyl to redo the interior. I have all the original seat frames.

After the metal fab work I will be moving onto carb rebuild and electrical.
