I'm riding with Luis again! I'll drive back if someone breaks something badly and needs help getting home ;)

what time tomorrow?

Whoops

Carter, For the regearing project:
You probably thought this out but I'll ask anyway.

Did you get new pinion seals for the diffs?
Good idea to replace while apart.

I don't know if your year vehicle came with spacers or crush sleeves that go between the pinion bearings. You might want to check with the guys in the 80 section. If it's crush sleeves you'll need them.

Does Luis have a shop press for pressing bearings?

Are you getting new bearings? I personally am fine with using the old bearings as they'll live as long a life as new bearings.
I'll bring my ring collection for pressing bearings.

Steve - thanks for asking. Seriously.

I got the 'master kits' for the front and rear diffs from Marlin. I actually forgot to order them initially and lost out on the 10% off. Oh well. But the kit contains "everything" (according to Marlin) that I need. Shims, bearings and seals.

Yeah, I wasn't sure either really! And not a whole lot of guys in the 80's section have actually replaced their own gears.

Sidebar: I've found the older the trucks are, the more knowledgeable their owners are. For example, 200's section talks about replacing speakers. 100's guys might install lockers. 80's guys do more, but generally stop short of breaking open the drivetrain. And so on.

If there were 20's series, I'd expect them to be forging their own gears out of a pit in their back yard, made from material dug up and melted down in their front yard. ;)

Anyway, what I actually *trust* when it comes to installing these gears is Zuk. Here's one of his install guides for an 80:

*THAT* is what I'd say a knowedgeable installation looks like on an 80 ;)

I'm pretty sure he does. Now that I know what's involved in pressing off the old bearings I'll ask him specifically - I'll call him this afternoon.

Yes. As a matter of fact, you kind of have to with an 80, because for the rear on the case-side bearing it's too close to grab it. You can see it here:

http://www.gearinstalls.com/FZJ80gearinstall.htm

Zuk has to take out his dremmel to cut off the cage, and then cut thru the race.

But none-the-less, if you have anything - like bearing press rings - that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Steve!

Just got off the phone w Luis. We're all set. He does have bearing press collars, but Steve - having more can't hurt!

In the next couple of days I'm going to outline the stuff that needs to be done and the list of tasks people can help with. That should help with "workflow" if you will.

More to come!

If you have the option of spacer vs. crush sleeve, I would go with the spacer/shims. Takes longer to set up, but less likely to cause problems down the road with lockers, oversized tires etc.

Don't forget the toaster oven and freezer :)

Well crap - I just dodged a bullet I think.

I was looking over all the parts for this weekend, and I notice the master kits say "W/O OEM E-LOCKER" on them. Uh-oh.

Marlin doesn't sell a kit that works with an e-locker 3rd!

Well.... a phone call over to Just Differentials and I have what I need heading to my house - I didn't realize they have a 29-spline pinion (and new yoke). Now I have to return the 5.29's and setup kits to Marlin.

And this kit has spacers, not crush sleeves.

You would think Marlin would have asked if you had an e-locker . At least you caught it now before it was to late .

Here's the work plan as I see it for Saturday. There are also other jobs I can add to the list depending on how fast things progress and how many people are looking for "something to do" :)

I figure once folks start arriving I'll dole out work as appropriate (if you have an affinity for something, I'm going to exploit your skillset!).

Bring a change of clothes!

If anyone has any suggestions, by all means chime in. Thanks in advance for everyone who's coming - looks like we're going to have perfect weather.

"Dole out work" omg I am laughing my ass off! That is funny, herding cats come to mind. If we are picking things to do I can operate a jack, but only cuz I don't know jack $hit... speaking of do we need anything else? Ie another jack, air hose, impacts, tools, run-out gauge etc..

I'm good for passing tools to people and going to pick up pizza

You can be the jack operator only if I can say, "BRET! JACK ON!" "BRET! JACK OFF!"

Ahem.

Luis has plenty of air hose... I'm going to bring a subset of my own tools, but I think Luis has most everything covered. Every time I ask him "Do I need to bring..." he already has it ;)

I *AM* bringing quite the selection of snap ring pliers tho... you remember what happened last time!!!

I will bring a small box of misc pieces parts that have been helpful in the past.

Well, it looks like I dodged another bullet.

My shipment from Slee, that has my lift kit and my PT kit in it, got held up by all the weather in Atlanta. It was supposed to come in today, but it didn't.

I just got an update that it'll be delivered tomorrow ... thank goodness for that. I don't mind not having the lift for Saturday, but I really need that PT kit while the transfer case is in pieces!!

I'll be arriving at Luis' house around 0730-0800. The fun will begin shortly thereafter!

Can't wait to meet you guys and make some contacts for when I have to dig into my truck

You and me both! A few new faces, some I haven't seen in wwwaaayyyy too long as well.

I haven't made it out with the truck since GSMTR last year! That's sad!

Well it looks like I'm out, last minute baby setting grandkids. See you all next time.

I can bring some zip ties and duct tape if it would help babysit??? Mainly because I have been told my shock collar theory has a few holes in it.
