Got into some mud Friday night, without the top on (not recommended), and found out that front tires want look in. Everything spins drive shaft, cv shafts, but not the tire. Can I rebuild the hubs, replace them, or is there something else causing this?

I'm not sure about an '88 4runner...I'm no 4runner expert, but some models have that ADD system....it's a vacuum activation "shift on the fly" 4wd system. It's prone to working and not working mostly plugged vacuum or solenoid, etc. If you have that system, check it out. But if you had this problem, you'd probably have the light in the dash too.

Manual hubs are extremely reliable. Do you have manual locking hubs? or Auto?

Yes I have the manual Asian hubs, and know they a pretty strong thats why I thought there could be something else. I guess I will tear them down and check them out first.
 
John, I was thinking that if your truck is just parked there in 2wd, you should be able to turn the axle shaft by hand no problem with the hubs unlocked.....then if you lock them, it should be totally impossible to turn the axle shafts, cause the axles would then be locked to the diff and you shouldn't be able to turn the axle.....

...just wanted to make sure that you know I'm not talking about turning the driveshaft....but rather, the Axle shaft going to the wheel...it should spin easily if unlocked in 2wd, but not at ALL locked....

X2 well said bud, also John it could be as simple as bad spring that forces the hub on the end of the axle shaft to engage.

yup tooooo short.

hey when you had the other springs on the truck i can remember the shackle sitting basically straight up and down.

the optimal angle would be a angled a little away from the axle, towards the rear of the truck.

that is how the last shackle inverted when we had installed the suspension.

i will give ya call when i get back to give ya the anti inversion shackles i am not using.
 
Put some blocks on top of the jack and jack up the rear end under your hitch right in the center to allow your suspension to droop then take a big crowbar and try to pry the shackle back. You may need a second person on the other side and do it at the same time. Then you can see if there is any improvement in the shackle angle when the weight of the truck is on them hopefully roll the shackle to the rear when you let it down easily. If no and it flip back to where it is now take pics for Tom and put the other set back on. It appeared that as you rhode on that set they did get better.

Considering my next option at the moment. If I put the old ones on, will I have to take the whole thing off again to put the anti inversions on tomorrow or can I just lift and secure the axle and then just unbolt the shackle and replace?

I've already sent Tom three emails with pics attached of the progress.
 
we can just put the shackles on without having to change out the springs.

pretty simple procedure.

Yea Dan's a pro I watched him replace his bushing during one of our night wrenching sessions before the crawl. The bushings put up a fight but Dan and 2lb mallet won. :D
