I've been reading up on the Aussie locker. It sounds good, but I'm still unsure.

One consideration is I also want some sort of air for my tires, either OBA or a CO2 system. A CO2 setup is anywhere from $2-300 bucks, and if the Aussie locker is $300 shipped, say $550 for both.

With ARB I'd need a locker + compressor. I'm guessing I could get them for around $1000...

I think ultimately I will end up with ARB, but I'm also trying to stretch the budget right now so I can take the new 40 to (hopefully) GSMTR in May, Ramble in June, and Sicily Island in July.

I talked to a couple of people on mud who have pulled 40's on a trailer with a FJ cruiser, and I think it's worth a shot.

So, I'm looking for a 'light' tandem axle trailer, locker, (soft?) doors, family cage, and the biggest thing, stuff that will make it possible for a female to tolerate camping in the south during the summer. That is a toughie, and the more I look, it may just be cheaper to get a hotel, but then I'd miss out on the nightly fun haha. (Ok just read the fun thing, yes my priorities have definitely been mixed up since joinging!)

I know I should just take it slow and add stuff over time, and the cage can probably wait some. I'm not going to put Blake at risk, and I already scared him enough in the FJC so I'd be less prone to do anything risky in the 40. The last thing I want is to make him skittish to come to the rides.

My brother would pull his 40 on a trailer with a 60 no problem. I think your FJ cruiser would pull the 40,trailer, and the 60.:D

So if I go with the Aussie in the rear the cruiser won't explode on the road? If I've read things correctly, as long as I don't pretend I'm in a Corvette the Aussie locker will be fine onroad? Do you think it had anything to do with your flop the other day?

I drove my 40 to work daily for a while and on the HWY regualry and never had an issue. It will force you to drive differently I did all the reading as well and believe me its really nothing to be concerned with. You adjust to it in no time. You can ask Corey we put one in his right before the cruiser crawl and I thinks he's been happy with it. Mike ran them in the front and rear and he can chime in as well. I haven't heard anyone speak negative about them. At our Gilmer trip I heard many folks praising them as well which is when I started looking into them. My flop was caused more from me locking up the brakes and the sudden jeking of the wheel to miss the dumb@ss. I do think if I had the wider wheels and tires instead of the skinnies I wouldn't of went over with a wider patch.

Ok thanks. The onroad characteristics was what I was worried about. I think the price is right on these. The ARB will have to wait, maybe put one in the front later on.

Mike, I'd like to hear how your 40 handled with front and rear Aussies. It looked like you had no problems maneuvering up in Alabama.

Mike's old truck has ARB now. It was very hard to turn with front hubs locked and in 4wd IMO.

Yeah, stick Landry's truck with elocker on in front and rear (which the autolocker in andother rig would do if you needed it) and try to turn... It's like trying to turn an elephant around w/ two hands.

From what I've read by adding the CDL switch I can turn the CDL off and it makes the steering easier and also with the pin 7 mod I can use the lockers in Hi as well. Will let you know this weekend. :D No doubt autolockers front and rear takes a man to drive, it would be a benefit to add some ram assist steering.

Is there an online service manual for a 40?

Anyone know offhand of what parts like washers or gaskets I should have on hand if I'm going to install an Aussie locker in the rear? Or what I could look at for preventive maintenance / replacement while doing it?

just a cover gasket ----- axle seals while you have them loose new lube

Here's my .02 worth:

For a daily driver, most agree that ARB's are hands down the best not only in strength, but in parts availability, and WHO doesn't want onboard air ANYWAY??? I know I do. They are expensive, but that's about it. All this talk about air lines leaking, etc is 100% user install error. Anyway, you can just carry a small CO2 tank and spare connections/fittings to adapt to the ARB and that solves that. They are instantaneous. I'd go with this on my daily driver for sure.

You have a couple of OEM options too, let's not forget....like LSD up front and even Cable lockers....remeber, anything can happen....air lines can break, leak or bust.... cables can pop...etc...etc....Electric lockers rely on a computer (ECU) as well and are prone to solenoids sticking, etc....they ALL have ups and downs...

The BIG thing I liked about the AUSSIE and DETROIT (they are basically the same to me) and LOCKRIGHT...is that they are SIMPLE SIMPLE SIMPLE. Nothing to break really.....and guaranteed to work. PERIOD..

If its just a trail rig, I'd say LINCOLN or AUSSIE in the rear....and LSD or ARB up front.

The 2 LOW mod on the 40 series will solve the steering issue, but of course you'll be in 2wd not 4wd....

Important, is to decide what the rig is for....daily driver...little of both...strictly trail rig, etc...these are important to know 1st.

For me, the 40 was weekend and trail only, so the Aussie in the rear was a reliable, simple no-brainer. I'd planned on ARB's up front with EXTREME AIR.
I like the fact that the Aussie locker guys are on MUD and outspoken about standing by their product....in writing, right here on Mud. Says a lot.

Might want to change out the bearings as well. They can get damaged when removing.

Ok so here's the vagina guy taking a stab at this but you could do it w/ just the two stands (although good to have something under your axles I'd think) and no need to bleed your brakes. We changed your brake lines last time so that's why we did that.. you're not lengthening or shortening them.. they should be good.

1. Jack up the front w/ the stands under the frame for support.
2. Chock the back wheels unless you find another set of stands...
2. Really do it in reverse of how we finished last time: Release the u-bolts, then the shackles, then the pins (spring pin) and shocks. Be careful not to ruin your good bushings getin all that crap off.

Good luck!

Ok, someone tell him really how to do it ;p

Ok, so no one commented on the this very technical write up????? :flipoff2:

I still love the FJC and it will be my DD. The 40 is for trails and leisurely days. I want to be able to take it on trails like that ravine at the SCC that I avoided because I was worried about body damage.

I will eventually have onboard air and co2, I'm looking at the Aussie right now mainly because it's less expensive and there are things I need to spend cash on to be ready for the summer. I figure if I'm really uncomfortable on the road with it I can pull it out and recoup a little cash.

I think I'll eventually go ARB in the front, and probably the rear somewhere down the road.

I suppose that my personal favorite setup would be the OEM Cable lockers. But alas, those are usually about 4k complete and in good order. Used to be able to pickup a complete FF axle WITH cable locker and all from SOR years ago...ran about 500 bucks...but now they are rare and pricey, and the FF axles don't come with the cable lockers... :(

Sounds to me like Aussie locker just might be the ticket. I'd not hesitate one bit on it. Loved'em.

PS: You'd be fine on most trails with the rear locker alone....

I 2nd the cable lockers I'd prefer over anything. Ox locker has a nice product but no offering for Toys. :frown: OEM Toyota like in Canadian Scott's 70 would be awesome. :)

I love my aussie. If I had to do it over again I would still put in another aussie. You can't beat the price for what you get. Get it you want regret it.
