Just got my tax bill. I'm curious what everyone's estimated vehicle value is? How the heck do they calculate it?

Mine is listed at $5000. (The 69 fj40)

I'm sure if I put up a fuss I could get them to lower it. Worked with my old boat... I wonder though at what point will the actual collector value come into play?

I'm not sure how they calculate it, but that seems crazy high.

All of the older vehicles I've owned, regardless of popularity, were about (or were) depreciated out and didn't cost much at all in taxes.

my 1985 4 runner, in good shape, is valued at $880 by wake county

guess it varies by county?

Guilford country has very high taxes. My property has a lower tax value than my sons house in Lexington but my tax bill is higher.

My 44 was initially values by New Hanover County at around $5k.
This year I got a notice in the mail stating that my vehicle MAY be considered a classic and subject to a new valuation.
I had to answer a bunch of questions regarding initial cost, level of restoration, etc.

I assured them it was a complete and total P.O.S. barely worth its value in scrap. (Be nice now guys, my feelings are easily hurt).

GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF NORTH CAROLINA

In the General Assembly read three times and ratified this the 29th day of July, 1995.

James, look up HB 1001 Taxation of Antique Motor Vehicles.
Genius.

"Honey you know you can only drive it in parades and stuff"..... "Yep"

Every day is a parade in Greensboro!

So, gotta turn in the old plate at the DMV
Ask for "antique plate"
Fill out the Guilford County paperwork stating it's an antique vehicle
Value becomes $500
Taxes go from over $100 annually to about $10.

Thanks!!!!

Section 2 #2 should cover anywhere you want to drive.Public interest functions. every time you drive anyplace you have public interest.

At what age is it an antique? Mine is turning 35.

Club activities.....you have an ONSC sticker on it...so everywhere you go, youre representing the club.

Ahhhhh! Now I know why you've taken so long getting it back on the road...you didn't wanna worry about inspection!

I need to go dig up the renewal I got last week, but I think they value my 1978 at $630. $30 annual Char/Meck county fee is way higher than the actual tax fee.

@copterjock, @S4Cruiser Thanks for the terrific info guys. Pure genius! I will take the registration to the local DMV and have it registered as an antique and save $'s on taxes. I hate having to turn money over to the state government knowing it will be tossed down a deep, dark hole.

Just did the math, the total Guilford County and High Point tax would be $7.11, however High Point still adds a $20 vehicle fee.
