I know tall skinny tires are in vogue now (along with overlanding, RTTs and patina :)), and I feel dirty for even saying it, but I like my tires wide. My alternative tire lifestyle is out in the open...

I am likely going to be in the market in the spring for my first set of new shoes in over a decade, and I am having a little difficulty finding rims that will fit and don't cost their weight in gold, so hoping for some ideas.

Two tires I am looking at now are:
  • Maxxis Creepy Crawler M8090 TL30008700 37X14.50-16LT; or
  • Maxxis Trepador Radial M8060 TL30027200 37X13.50-17LT
It would be for a fj40 with 79 disc front axles and rear GM calipers., so looking for a rim that won't rub on the tie rod ends or the disc brake calipers.

Does anyone have a wide rim (10" or 11") that would work for this application (most rims on the lists of what works are narrower)? There are M/T Classic III's 16x10, 6 on 5.5 with 4.5" backspace, very pricey but would they work for the 37X14.50-16LT? Anything more affordable?

TIA

Not familiar with this tire, but LOVING the price - looks knarly. I am going to be looking for something optimized for southeast wheeling, mud and rock -- is this the type of terrain you have used it on (I see Jefferson in your profile, but not sure where that is)?

Which Method did you get? I see a 319 gloss black, price not horrible, $299 17x9 6x5.5 4.5" backspacing

im originally from the pnw. so yes lots of varied terrain. mud, rocks and rain.
they were excellent on road as well.
these are head and shoulders better than the km2s i had prior.

im running stock fjc alloys.
if i bought methods it would be the 703 machined

I'm more of a tall and narrow guy now, but earlier, 35 x 13.5 on a 15'' rim.

Im still running old 35x13.5/15 bfg krawler, love those tire in rock, mud and deep spring snow, one finger driving on road, but they are NLA , i have 15x8 wheels with weld-on beadlock that give +1" = 15x9
With a 15x10 3.5 BS you can get 35x16/15 bogger , if you switch to 16" wheels, 4" BS should clear the tie rod end

That looks super sweet!
I have been looking at the Cooper stt pro in 37x13.50r17 that @gnob mentioned and they looki like they might be an affordable option (on 17x9 rims).
