I was wondering if there is a company out there that makes the toolbox covers on the tailgate out of plastic or some other material than carpet. I love the look of the carpet on them, but with what I do with work they will not last long. I have a friend making some covers for them out of duck material (think Carheartt), but would like something more durable and more permanent.

Could you make some thin stainless steel or aluminum covers and attach them to the carpet with Velcro?

I have a question...How much weight can that 200 series tailgate handle? It sure seems light weight when I close it. I wonder if you got on the tailgate and concentrated all your weight on one knee if it would bend it.

The 80 series tail gate has this problem. I covered it with a 1/4" piece of aluminum, placed the carpet on that and fixed the problem there.

I have climbed over the tailgate many times with one knee getting stuff out/in it can handle the weight. What i did notice is that it will lower by a few mm with load and come back up which i think is from the tailgate cables which would probably go before that panel bends.

*edit*
Just re-read your post and realized you're talking of the plastic panels. Don't know who but someone fabbed up a covering on the rear lower gate I'll try to search and see if I can find the post

Canvasback sells a liner that covers the tailgate area. It costs about $20. It's supposed to have some velcro already attached that will hook onto the carpeted area. It's probably similar to the type that your friend is making.

I actually just ordered the tailgate piece last week and have not yet received it.

This is a great idea

Could you post a link?

Plastics supplier.

A sheet of 1/4" or so hdpe (cutting board material).

A hand-held sabre saw and some velcro.

Issue solved, I think. ;)

I sit on my 200 tailgate all the time with no issues, and have had another join me as well. I am about 200 pound as was the other guy. So I am going to go with at least 400 pounds, as long as it is not dropped on it.

We've had the whole fam on ours, i'm 240 plus another 240 for girls! I'd say 500 atleast!

Well we will see how it works. Had a couple of slip covers made out of duck material, and will be putting some duckback on tomorrow for water proofing. I will let you all know how it pans out.

Anyone have an update on these? I've hauled enough stuff across them that mine look grungy. I'd prefer to just replace the two removable carpeted panels with plastic panels if I could find them. Alternately I'm thinking about removing the carpet and trying to find a suitable material to cover them. For the first time I'm suddenly wishing my interior was black so I could just use a sheet of ABS plastic as I have a suspicion finding matching tan is going to be a PITA
