I have climbed over the tailgate many times with one knee getting stuff out/in it can handle the weight. What i did notice is that it will lower by a few mm with load and come back up which i think is from the tailgate cables which would probably go before that panel bends.Could you make some thin stainless steel or aluminum covers and attach them to the carpet with Velcro?
I have a question...How much weight can that 200 series tailgate handle? It sure seems light weight when I close it. I wonder if you got on the tailgate and concentrated all your weight on one knee if it would bend it.
The 80 series tail gate has this problem. I covered it with a 1/4" piece of aluminum, placed the carpet on that and fixed the problem there.
Canvasback sells a liner that covers the tailgate area. It costs about $20. It's supposed to have some velcro already attached that will hook onto the carpeted area. It's probably similar to the type that your friend is making.
I actually just ordered the tailgate piece last week and have not yet received it.
They actually do offer products for the LX...which should hopefully fit the same for the LC.
