Does anyone know if the tail lights from a 69 FJ40 are the same as the tail lights for a 65? Thanks a lot

I believe they are the same through '73 model year.

Careful. There are three sets of early tail lights, see the SOR website.
Here is what I think:

FJ25 - early FJ40 (say 1963) -- the tail lights are tiny, almost the size
of the small lights in the bib (I have a brand new set by accident if
someone needs them)

FJ40 1963ish through 1969 -- the tail lights are small in diameter but
much larger than the earlier lights. This is what is on my cruiser and
I can measure them if you need me to.

FJ40 1969 through 1973 -- the diameter of the taillights increases but
is still only red and round. I bet the change was due to some federal
law about the size of lights.

Damn, I have a 65 so I guess I cant use the 69's. Does anyone have the part number for the 63-69 tail lights? CDan only has a book that goes back to 69 so he can't find the number for the early ones.

here is what SOR says:

148-01-AE Tail Lamp Assembly-Fits 1958-1963 FJ25 & FJ40 37.55 Yes

148-01A Tail Lamp Assembly-Fits 1964-1968 FJ40-Trim ring diameter is 4 inches-Does NOT come with #148-07 tail lamp cover, order separately if needed 30.34 Yes

148-01B Tail Lamp Assembly-Fits 1969-9/73 FJ40-Trim ring diameter is 5 1/4 inches-Does NOT come with #148-25 & #148-26 tail light brackets, order separately if needed

The '69 is a transition year. It might use the larger lights or might use
the smaller lights. My '69 (so titled) is really a '68 so it uses the smaller
lights.

Cool,
thanks so much for the help.

TTT. I need the same PN for the 63-69 Taillight assembly. My dealer called me trying to help out one of our local club members. Thanks in advance.. Erik.

The later ~65-69 lights are available at the dealer 81550-60011

I have a used set with the brackets for $50. I bought them hoping they were the fj25 style and they were not.

thank you very much!
And Since you've got a set sitting there! What's the measurements on them? I'm trying to determine as well which ones will fit the rear holes in my FJ45 Shorty rear tub. I guess the OD measurement of the cone in the back? Or the measurement of the bolt holes that go to the brackets? Then we might play let's make a deal :)
I didn't even start out needing these but might!

Erik,
The mounting plates are the same. The only differences are the holes for the light back (larger ~65-69 lamp, larger hole) and the 2 light mounting holes.

The fj25 style is the same as a bib lamp. The light mounting holes are about 2 3/8 apart.

The ~65-69 2 light mounting holes are 3 1/4

Bottom is the fj25 style, top is the ~65-69

These plates are notorious for getting bent because they are so thin. Conferr made a thicker version way back when -- has anybody seen a set? I would love to have some cut to straighten my lights out.

Depending on the interest I bet we could get some made....

the 1969 to 08/73 tail lamps use a mount similar to the earlier style, however, since the size of the lamp is larger than the 65-68's, they shaped the brackets so to make the lamp miss the lower part of the tub, and keep them on the rear crossmember. They also staggered the mounting bolt holes for the lamp bracket to the frame, as they are not in a strait line top to bottom on the frame, they are at an angle....
