Hey guys any tips on removing the tail gate screws on a 69 FJ40? The screws appear to have never been removed as it has original paint. So far I have used a torch to heat them up and penetrating fluid. It has been a 50/50 affair. Oh yeah I broke my easy out as well! The screws with the inner nuts are managable. The threaded in screws are a PITA! Thanks Mark.

I'm a little confused with your use of the term 'threaded in screw' ? All of the bolts are 8mm x 1.25 tapped holes except for the latch to tailgate bolts which are 6mm x 1.0 tapped holes.

Heat/vibration/shock and penatrating oil in combination will remove most bolts. However, the 6mm tailgate screws will break even with small amounts of rust. Just resign yourself to drilling them out and re-tapping the holes.

Hand impact wrench. You hit it with a hammer. Usually sells for about $15 at Sears. That and Kroil will loosen any screw.

If all else fails give them a cut across the top with a thin Dremel discblade and use a BFS. [Screwdriver]

Agreed. They are about unpossible.

Because the screw heads are fairly large I was able to get a Vice-Grip pliers on and unscrew them (mostly). Use a fairly new, genuine tool with a good bite to it. Not that made in Taiwan crap. I used P Blaster, and turn a quarter to half turn at a time. Get inside the body panel and spray and wire brush the exposed threads too. It was hard and time consuming but way better than fixing broke junk.

Diddo on the vice grips. I plan on replacing all nuts/bolts with stainless anyway. New question, anyone use SS button screws instead of phillips head. looks close to same size but use a allen wrench instead of screw driver.
