I am rebuilding a spare case I got to swap out the one that's in the truck, and I have a few questions...

I am tryiing to make this thing perfect since I am chasing a few vibration issues so comment appropriately.

Check out the wear on the main shaft where the low/high ring rides. how does that look to you guys?

Also, how the hell to I get that pilot bearing out? I was going to chisle it out.... i dont know... maybe make an end for my slide hammer that fits it. it is the only bearing I didn't replace in my existig case so I am tempted to get it out.

Also, I am scared to hammer it in... seems like it'd get mangled easily...

let me know what you guys think.

thanks,
Marco

You talking about the roller/needle bearing in the end? There's a special puller of course, or you can use a thin screwdriver and mangle in one side, then pull it with pliers -- That's what I did.

Shaft looks way worn, but someone with more gear experience will have to chime in.

I think it looks pretty worn too. Yeah, I am talking about the small needle bearing in the end. Did you just hammer the new one in with an appropriately sized socket?

Yes. Goes in pretty easy. Let is sit in the freezer for an hour, first.

As far as that shaft goes, a new Japanese aftermarket is around $175. Or you can buy a used from $OR for around $140. I had to replace mine and I bought the aftermarket one from SOR.

Also, I think there may be some hardened units available from Marlin or an Aussie manuf.... But I can't remember where.

Wow, those shafts are expensive... $249.00 new from SOR.. and $120 used.

I'll keep looking.

the low range gears did look tempting though.

I've got my old one that's usable -- but has some scoring where I think the large bearing was moving... It's yours for shipping, if you want it. Maybe it can be fixed ? I can post a pic to show you what I mean.

post up a pic if yo ucan (if it's easy) I am calling cruiser dan to see what he can do.. Just got off the phone with Kurt at cruiser Outfitters and it looks like he could have gotten the jap aftermarket one for around $140, but they are backordered..

he had the best price..again. and was super great on the phone as always.

looks like Marks gears have gotten expensive too.

Yeah, it's all crazy expensive -- I'll have to post a pic tomorrow, I'm off to work and can't quickly find the ones I have.

great thanks, I appreciate it!

Are you having problems with the case you rebuilt summer of 07?

Was that main shaft your original or did all the wear ccurr since you rebuilt it?

Sorry if these are dumb questions, I am planning on rebuilding my t-case in the near future, and would like to learn from your possible mistakes.

Hey Alf,

Nice paper weight in the picture above. That thing got toasted!

yeah, I think i am gonna pass on that one. Let me see if I can get a new one from C Dan when he calls me back. I appreciate the offer though.

Bryan, as far as my case gose thats in the truck now, it has been runing fine for the past year. I have a vibration on 4wd high on the hwy, but I am almost sure I just need a double cardan shaft on the front as my pinion angle is in line with my drive shaft, and when I rebuilt the transfer case the bearing preloads were right. There is some question in my mind that it may be that pilot bearing in the output shaft going, but I can't be sure. I only wonder because that is the only one I did not replace. Also, when I put mine together the output shaft was worn as well, not as bad as the one pictured above, but worn. I put it together anyways. I think it is still a good case, but to speed up my tranny swap, I sourced a used case to rebuild now (whih is the one I am asking questions about above). I want to make sure this one is perfect though, so I have decided to replace anything that shows any wear, that output shaft being the main thing.

I'll know the condition of the existing case when I pull it out. I am curious to see how it has done over the past year of general debauchery and tourture myself. I've slammed it into 4wd a few times, shifted from low to high while rolling, put LOTS of miles on it in 4wd high and low, and generally treated it like crap. If it did well, I know this new one will be bullet-proof (I hope anyways)

Referencing Spike's worn shaft, my stubborn butt would try to weld (or better yet, braze) on new material, then grind it smooth. Where appropriate, I'm not afraid to use emery cloth and a speedi-sleeve, as well. I'll concede that these ideas of mine don't always work, hehe.

Just got a brand new ond from Cruiser Dan for 190 bucks. Thanks guys for the advice and offers, I really appreciate it!

looks like that shaft is pretty much like new after all. here's a comparison between the old and the new on i just got in the mail..
