I'm liking the idea of using hydraulic hose covering for the synthetic rope. Gonna copy it!

I've done something similar with Amazon-sourced stuff. I can report that under load on short pulls, the start/edge of the covering tends to snag at the fairlead, leading to the covering bunching up outside instead of rolling onto the drum with the rope. May need a reset during the pull. Perhaps the covering is a bit too loose. Overall not a big issue.
That makes sense, I had seen people having the same issue on other forums. I taped mine down to the rope in a cone shape hoping when I pull it back in it wont bunch up too much.
I am. 3/8"x100'. Works great on moonshine with my 8274.

I called them, their splice guy put a soft loop eye on one end and a tight wrap on the other to insert in winch drum.

Johnny, how much more line do you think you could spool on your 8274? TIA
warn issues 150'. i did 100' as well for the sake of sideloading the drum with funny pulls. having some line extensions are nice and light if needed for more distance. i have 2 25/30 extensions.

Good info, thanks gnob. I have some extensions for the 100 which is currently running synthetic but the 40 has wire rope on an 8274 and wanting to switch to synthetic for the sake of keeping my recoverbag as light as possible.
Maybe another 50', but 100' with extensions has been fine for me. Only need to use extensions every once in a long while.

I have less than maximum on my drum and carry an extension also. You get more pulling power with fewer layers on the drum. If you don’t wheel where anchors are a long ways away, this makes more sense to me.

Time to freshen up the 11-year old (
) rope on the ‘80. And get some more extensions.
We tried to help someone else out of a predicament in the middle of a rutted hill the other day. I look at it, simple thing, I’ll just drive the signed forest service road (rather than trying to drive by the stuck vehicle on that wildcat climb) to the top of the wash, get the truck positioned at the top of the climb with the stuck vehicle, spool out winch (80 ft), add the extension (30 ft), perhaps another strap (30ft), pull from bottom layer of the drum. Well, I completely misjudged the distance looking uphill. Looking downward from the top - not even close. And the rope on the winch looks ratty.
So, fresh 80 ft of 3/8” rope, and another 100 ft 3/8” extension. I’ll probably go with Amazon-sourced rope and re-do all loops. I also need to think more about rope lengths in case I’ll have to reset during such an uphill pull. And I probably should take a look at what recovery equipment has ‘migrated’ into the K5 over time…

Hmm. The 3/8” rope I had acquired in 2021 was listed at 25,000lbs breaking strength back then. The product now advertised with the same name magically has acquired 1500lbs more strength and is now listed at 26,500lbs breaking strength…

Every winch I own runs 75-80% of max....less potential problems when it sideloads, and better pulling power. Extensions are easy to pack and re-wrap, plus they can double as a replacement line. I carry one 50' and one 30' extension, more useful than one longer one.

So. 3/8" rope from Amazon came in, 80ft in orange, and 100ft in gray, the latter for making extensions.
Both advertised at 26,500lbs breaking strength. Both came with hooks (that I don't need...). The larger one came with the gray rope, advertised at 33,500lbs (breaking??) strength. The smaller one came with the orange rope, is advertised at 35,500lbs strength...
Gray one supposedly has a polyester coating, orange one is advertised as Dyneema, then as proprietary, then as heavy duty UHMWPE.
Probably should have gone with another color instead of gray for visibility, but the color ones didn't line up with the delivery window I needed.
I promise not to try the ropes by winching a "busload of nuns". For the few pulls I've done., those Amazon-sourced ropes have worked well for me. and as before, I will re-do the loops for the thimbles.

Thanks, I’m aware about the link you posted. Main thing that bugs me is that those ropes have loops with very little rope buried on the return. The ones I’ve done have 3 ft buried plus a 12” taper.
definitely good to resplice the ends but 4' is a bit much. iirc sufficient splice on 3/8 is 24-28"
