I have a 95 FJ80 with 72k on it. Is it too late to switch to synthetic Amsoil? I am afraid of developing any leaks. I dont consider my engine a high mileage one and am on verge of doing it. Any thoughts guys??

I switched to synthetic all around at 115K, no worries whatsoever with 132K on there now. HTH. BTW, I think Eric aka erics_bruisers is an amsoil rep, might want to contact him via private message and support a fine forum fello and all HIS dogs!!! HTH, welcome,

My FZJ80 has 130K and from what I know about syntetics I would not switch from regular to styntetic. However, I do have a question about the other oils:

How about in this high mileage truck changing the differentials and transfer case to Syntetic?
Is this ok? Are there less chances for leaks?

Thanks,

I started using synthetic at 140K mi in everything (D1 5w40 in the engine, Redline in the diffs/tranny), right now have 180K mi. So far, no leaks. Use a thicker synthetic to reduce oil burn.

Just switched the new truck to synthetic at 132k and not worried a bit about leaks - brakes, engine, all three diffs. Largely urban legend, except on domestic crap or anything British ;)

I would guess with that mileage you are going to be totally fine, if nothing else, you would harm nothing by trying the syn and IF a leaked developed, you could change back. Try a search using "engine oil" "oil" "syn" etc under the 80's section and you'll find a TON of great discussion on the subject. Cary is the resident expert and usually recommends checking out bobistheoilguy.com for more reading. Hope this helps.

BTW - I'm @ 136k running Mobil 1 Syn with no leaks.

its a toyota. Pour in oil and forget about it.

had leaks before gojgn to synthetic, no change after, there are a lot of threads on this already.

No leaks and I switched to Mobil 1. Cleaned out lots of dirt and deposits and my valve cover started a slow leak. Replaced the valve cover gasket and no more leaks. So, it might make something leak, but it is identifying something going bad and should be fixed in any case.

Go synthetic and don't look back. As previously stated if leaks do develop, which I doubt on a rig of that mileage then all it did was expose a problem that you need to know about anyway. Mobil 1 0w-40 full synth. Is my choice, just 02. :flipoff2:

If you search Cary's posts, he recommends 0-40W Mobil 1. You could spend hours reading his posts on oil. Very informative.

I don't think that would work since i have pm'ed him twice about getting grease and he won't respond back.

I agree 100%. Easy to get and excellent performance.

Hey CJ, I understand, but for what its worth, I imagine that the lack of response does not equal a lack of interest; Eric is constantly busy saving some special soul who was not wanted where it was and I think that he is having issues getting "it all" done when you include the amsoil adventures and the puppy adventures. IOW, he's a good enough guy to warrant a little late response if you can wait a while for the product. I plan to order way in advance in case the late response is the rule and not the exception. Still, I'll always support people like that unless they make things too traumatic for me in the process.

BTW, does amsoil make any universal grease that goes everywhere from wheel bearings to trunion bearings to birfields to driveshafts??? Or, do you still need to get several varieties to do those things?

I'm probably wrong, but I thought that the Mobil greases were not what you want to use with the birfields? IOW, does Mobil make a grease with the moly component, if so, anyone know the product number? I have yet to see the stuff. Thanks.

I just looked at M1 grease yesterday and didn't see any with moly. So for now, i still use amsoil grease everywhere. I use the same on my driveshafts as i do in the birfs.

Turbo, i hear ya. But i pmed him a month ago. I'm not raggin him out, just saying i wouldn't waste my time trying to get from eric, just go another route. I am sure that eric is busy.
