Looks like it might even be an OEM part...

Does anybody know anything about this? Spotted on a late-model 200 series in Ghana

Thanks very much!

Looks to be a factory option on certain overseas 200's. As you can see the entire rear liftgate/tailgate is oriented differently, with different license plate mounting and emblems, and the mounts for the tire carrier integrate into the D pillar. Here's another thread on this same topic. Not sure how feasible a retrofit would be, considering how this most likely uses entirely different rear gates as well as more reinforcement inside the D pillar and tailgate.

However, you can still do a tire or cargo swingout without an aftermarket bumper, with a hitchmount swingout.

One of the most well known on the market is the Wilco Offroad Hitchgate:

A new offering is the RIGd Supply UltraSwing:

Hope this helps!

RIGd won't work on 200s.. I remember talking to them at Expo East, and they were mentioning since our tow hitch is integrated in the bumper, it will not allow the tailgate to drop with the design of their tire carrier.

Thanks for the colour. I’m familiar with the Wilco but appears to crush the departure angle. Would be handy for a part-time second spare though if I ever get to do my dream Alaska trip...

Kaymar and Outback Accessories both make a tire carrier that allows one to maintain the stock plastic bumper, albeit with some modifications:

The factory carriers are sweet, the last USA bound Toyota to see one was the early 90's 4-Runner. The parts are all available from overseas sources, but they add up in price... not to mention the carrier and tailgate have hefty shipping rates due to size. I always add it all up and then think better of it.

You'd need to make the rear quarter reinforced for the weight of the swing out.

It may have some of the inserts inside the corner.

Looks great! - How do you like it? Seems to get good reviews on this forum.

has it made the departure angle materially worse? Hard to tell from pictures.

How do I like the Wico ? I like it very much. I've had it for over five years. I normally have it on my Porsche Cayenne .

Those look awesome with the tight integration with the factory bumper. Almost looks stock.

Apologies for another ignorant question: does anybody know what is the largest tyre that can be persuaded into the stock spare location?

I have tried to search threads here but keep finding answers to “largest tyre on stock suspension”

Not averse to trimming brackets or the like that aren’t important to make a little more space. Thx!

I bought mine with a 285/75r17 Nitto RG in the spare location.

I was able to fit a 33" 275/70/18 tire. Forget about using the hitch as the tire butts right up to the rear of the receiver.

I have a 295/70-18 in the spare location and it’s a tight fit but no issue. That is the biggest you can go. You will need to remove a little metal bracket but the tire shop will do it. Super simple
