Swing-out tyre carrier on OEM bumper?

However, like you mentioned, a swing-out carrier that utilizes the OEM bumper skin offers no benefit in rear departure angle.
I have a full rear bumper and like it for the utility, but it really doesn't improve the departure angle much. The factory bumper skin is tight against the rear crossmember (at the hitch). What a rear bumper does improve is the side skirt clearance behind the rear wheels a lot, and when you drag, you have the reassurance you aren't destroying the side skirts.

I do wish it made more of a difference on true departure angle, but the LX 'H' mode does help with that quite bit, luckily.

I've ordered the Kaymar K20010L from LongRangeAmerica which is described as:

Armour:LC200 Kaymar
Standard Tire Carrier
LHS- fits factory LC200
Rear Bumper.
LC200 Kaymar
Standard Tire Carrier
LHS- fits factory LC200
Rear Bumper.

It does not require the full bar and adapts into the factory bumper.

We will see how it fits on the LX570. There'd be issues with AHC interference on the passenger side but the driver side should be clear. Hopefully it arrives in February.

Is this kit designed for and confirmed to work on US Land Cruisers (not LX570)? What are the compromises besides blocking the tail lights with the tire? Does it affect the parking sensors? Very interested in seeing the installation.

Interesting accessories for the spare tire. Can't deny that the rear mounted spare completes the expedition look.

To play devils advocate a bit on weight, it's all too easy to keep tossing the biggest tank and accessories on the rig. At some point, it compromises a well rounded, great performing and durable vehicle on account of weight. An LRA 40 gallon tank is something like 100lbs tank + (40gallons * 6lbs/gallon) or about 350lbs. That represents just over 20% of the vehicle payload committed to gas. Then add the rear bumper, carrier, etc...

Just saying that it's worthwhile to account for weight in building any car as it's all too easy to go down the path of building a compromised tool that may not work as well in the end.

Agreed completely. Definitely something to consider and all great points.

My last vehicle (second gen Tacoma) was overbuilt. ARB bar, winch, Slee sliders, CBI rear, ARB drawers, topper, etc... I’ll not go that route again - though I purchased it with 90% of those mods - it was too much weight. Even though the truck was well-sorted; I could feel it strain. In hindsight, if I could change that truck, I would have kept the sliders, topper, and drawers only; those mods offered the most utility given their weight.

We’ve toyed with the idea of getting a small RV/travel trailer once the market corrects; I’d like to use the 200 for tow duty and day trips in/around our destinations. I think the extended range would really come into play (and shine) with the towing requirement in mind. The added weight in that scenario would be worth the utility, IMO; also keeping in mind that the option is always there to not fill the LRA tank to 100% capacity.

He knows what he’s talking about.

Don’t forget to take pics for your upcoming install post!

Good point there @TeCKis300 That's part of why I've preferred a hidden winch mount and just the rear tire carrier (not a full bumper replacement).

My use case for my previous 100 and now the LX570 doesn't include anything I'd need steel or aluminum bumpers for so I've never been able to justify the weight, let alone cost. I could be convinced to add some deer strike protection for the radiator, but it'd be overkill for my particular use in the areas I travel.

For expanded range, I'd place a RotoPax style removable container where the spare used to be, but only for a trip in which it'd likely be needed. Otherwise, I again couldn't justify all that extra weight or cost either.

@TheLCProject any news on the Kaymar tire carrier? Did it arrive from Aus?

I’ll be selling my Kaymar rear and swings once my new one arrives.

Those look awesome with the tight integration with the factory bumper. Almost looks stock.
When I bought my LRA tank, I asked about these, since LRA is a Kaymar dealer. They said if I wanted one at a discount, they had a local guy who was selling his almost-new one because he didn't like it. Apparently it wasn't beefy enough for him. I didn't get any additional details, but I decided to go with the full Kaymar rear bumper, instead. Pretty happy with that so far.

What’s driving the sale and replacement?
I don’t want to deal with swings anymore. I’m going to be backing off on the level of trail that require steel protection, and I’m building a new cargo area to accommodate the spare inside.

I had mine twisted up on both sides. Had a local fabricator fix it and reinforce it. Also shaved it a bit.

What gauge or thickness of steel is that?
