I had started this discussion in another tread but thought it maybe a good idea to separate the topic from the original ARB rear bumper install.

The issue is the possibility to retrofit some of the off-road goodies found on a GX-R V8 "Winch" model available here in Saudi Arabia on the VX-R model.
The latter is more luxuriously appointed (Leather, Nav, DVD, crawl control, etc) but lacks the more usefull features of the GX-R like 2 spare wheels, locking rear diff and a winch.

Trawling through the various car markets I finally found some cars to take pics.
The wheel carrier pics are from a special edition VX-R which has the 2 spare wheels, some extra gold chrome, different sidesteps and the spare wheel box. Clearly visible are the different bottom half of the tail gate, different right hand side quarter panel, mounting of the wheel carrier on the right hand side rear pillar. Top half of the tail gate is the same in terms of sheet metal but has an additional bracket to lock the wheel carrier and the location of the various badges is different. Also different is the omission of the standard VX-R rear view camera.

A nearby GX-R was equipped with winch and locking rear diff. According to the text on the yellow sticker the winch is rather to 3600kg / 8000 Lb. Its mounted well behind the hawser, neatly between the front frame rails by the looks of it. Toyota supplies a neat remote control including a winch overheat warning. It connects with the plug in the top right hand corner of the picture. The lock/release lever of the winch is located behind the hole on the top left side. When not in use, a plastic shield covers all holes in the front bumper.
The car was locked so couldn't take a picture of the diff lock switch but it looks very much like the rotary 4H - 4L switch and is mounted immediately below the center lock switch occupying two "free" positions.

I've tried to get a price indication at the Toyota spare parts center to get this conversion done but this is so far outside their normal business that I only ended up confusing everybody. Other than getting a price for the wheel carrier itself (SR1700 or US$450) no luck so far. Will probably have to try a few more times. Note that this price compares very favourable with the SR2750/US$730 for the ARB wheel carrier (ARB p/n 5700211)

I have some more pics but don't know how to add them...:o

Retrofitting the factory swing out tire carrier has been discussed a few times in 80s tech. The problem with it is cost and the need to add reinforcements to the quarter panel to support the weight of the carrier. Instead of trying to source new parts you probably would be better off getting them off a wrecked 200. Just find one that matches the color of your rig and take the tailgate and all necessary parts.

I really can't tell what is different about the quarter panel so if you could point out the differences I'd appreciate it.

Hmm...it's so interesting how many versions there are.

I'd still like to see the switch if you ever get around to taking a pic of it.

On the 80 series this conversion was easy, at least on the models supplied here;)
They came standard with an aluminum roofrack, to aid access to it there were 3 steps mounted on the right hand side rear pillar. Mounting a wheel carrier was as simple as unbolting the two bottom steps and placing the carrier over the existing holes. Only for the locking mechanism some new holes were required in the tailgate. As these points don't carry much weigth, I never had any trouble with that installation.
For the 200 however there are no steps, the roofrack has been replaced by some useless rails and the wheel carrier is a pain to mount. Progress eh?!
On these pics you can see the changes required to the right quarter panel. On the top mount the rather crude (simple?) locking mechanism compared to the ARB /Kaymar jobs that come with gas struts.
And a front bumper view of a winch mount.

I finally found a picture of a GXR model with diff lock. I could only find a picture of the switch. Will someone please post a picture of the actual locker on the axle + wiring up frame if possible:hhmm:.

I believe that magic dial is the same as the one for the 100 series (rear locker only).

The parts of the 200 spare wheel carrier:

The rear trim with the swing out tyre carrier is different, with the number plate relocated to the left (on LHD models).

With the spare wheel carrier, there are extra parts for reenforcing; and the right hand rear quarter panel is a different part number.
