So i think i almost have my mother talked into buying a localy owned 80 with the lockers. My truck, however doesn't have the lockers. Knowing the kind hearted woman my mom is, i know she would never use the lockers and would be much more happy if the lockers were in my truck. So......question is, just how hard would it be to take my axles (w/o lockers) and exchange them from my mom's 80 (w/ lockers)?

Really depends how much work you want to do - you could swap everything or just axle housings w/ thirds. I believe cdan has done this swap on his '93 - the hard part IIRC was you need part of the wiring harness to make them work. But then again - if you've got a driveway and tools ... gonna be much cheaper than ARBs.

Tucker, i was thinking (and that's pretty scarey) that if i were to drop the axle's from the 80 with the lockers, everything should just bolt right up. I would have to disconnect the switch for the locker and reinstall on my rig. Then, put my plain jane axles under my mother's rig.

Your thinking is correct (taken they are both rear FF w/ ABS) in that the physical bits are exactly the same and will swap ... it's the wiring harness that isn't the same from locked to unlocked truck. I believe you can tie in the parts you need ... but you would need to search or ask someone who's done it.

Thanks, kinda what i'm doing now. The swap would be from a 95 to a 95.

Sure would be a lot easier to just trade trucks, wouldn't it? Unless you've already welded your sliders on..

That's funny nak. I would like to swap with her, except i've done a lot to my truck that she wouldn't want, especially the lift and scratches. Plus, i've wheeled my truck and beat on it a little, taken the keyless entry out and alarm. All those things mean she doesn't want mine. But being the kind hearted mother she is, she said i could swap the axles for the holy lockers as long as i didn't mess anything up.

Notice she said If you didn't mess anything up.

They should be a bolt for bolt swap other than the wires. Ofcourse you'll leave the harness on the locking axles when you swap. So all you'll need is her locking ecu and switch for the interior. The wires are already run inside the truck but you will need one length of wire for the rear. The harness on the rear axle connects outside of the body and your truck will only have the harness inside the cab. There is a wire length on hers that makes the connection from the axle harness to the interior harness.

Good luck....those axles are damn heavy remember to be careful, best to use two jacks if your doing it in a driveway.

Slee can always fill you in too.

I would think that swapping just the axles would be a bit easier than swapping everything else.

Heck, just by swapping the springs and caster correction you're well into to swapping the axles themselves. After that it's just electrical harnesses and such. Probably all in one good day's work, if you know what to do.

The main wiring harness on the floor that runs from the front to rear of the truck is different. You might have to pull a lot of the interior. Swapping the rest of the electrical pieces is fairly simple.

The electrical is what has me worried. Pulling the interior is no problem since i've already stripped the 80 out once. Wiring the actuators up is what i'm worried about. Well, i guess i'll find out if my mother bought that truck tonight or not.

If you do it, be sure to take it somewhere your mom can't see it. If she walked out and saw the interior on her new-to-her Land Cruiser all ripped out, she'd probably have a conniption.

Haha...

If your getting the lockers for free!!!!....then just buy the wiring you need.

If you're ok with electrical it probably would not be all that hard to build your own relay and switch system.

I know there are aftermarket manufacturers of Tacoma E-lock harnesses, if they can do it, so can you. :D

I wonder about the dash lights?

You will need to swap:

Front axle
Rear axle.
Wiring from front axle to cowl.
Wiring from rear axle/ABS to LH quarter panel.
Floor harness from LH quarter panel to LH kick panel.
Diff lock switch.
Diff lock ECU from RH kick panel.
Indicator lights for instrument panel.

You could leave the indicators in the other dash and buy new ones to avoid having to pull 2 dash boards apart.

Thanks all. Dan, i'll give you a call if and when this ever happens. I hope it does. My mother really wants the truck, just getting a loan for a 10 year old car is not easy. I told her to get a personal loan since that's what i did. Got my fingers crossed, cause if she gets it, i'm stealing the axles!!

Al, i don't think the thirds would work since there is a mounting spot for the locker actuator on the housing. THe non-locked axles do not have this "perch" for lack of better words.
