I found a 1998 with original trd supercharger installed when first bought. Original owner with 135k miles.

What do you guys think about superchargers and what do you think the price range is if its in very good condition?

That's a pretty good asking price if it's clean.

A supercharger puts more stress on the engine in general. For me, the 100 is plenty powerful enough for highway and off road use. I've never needed more power, even climbing steep grades at or above timberline in Colorado.

The supercharger would be neat, but it's going to:
1. Suck more gasoline, lowering your range
2. Add some weight to an already heavy beast
3. Stress the motor more

Reliability is king for me so the supercharger doesn't really add much in my eyes. It'd be neat to have, but the 2UZ grunt is plenty for most folks.

I wouldn't pay much extra for it, but I wouldn't necessarily avoid it.

How is it going to add more weight?

Besides the above, I believe you have to run premium fuel. You'll want to ask if the current owner used that.

If be a little cautious of opinions of people that have never owned a supercharged vehicle.

I had an 80 series with the TRD supercharger and it was awesome. The supercharger adds power everywhere across the power band, unlike a turbo which only adds boost at higher exhaust flow and suffers from boost lag. Fuel consumption is no worse unless you put your foot into it - all it is doing is compressing air to make better, more efficient combustion. The only downside is the extra cost of running super unleaded. It adds a ton of torque, which for me was most noticeable when towing. The TRD supercharger kits are a work of art.

I've also owned several non-supercharged 80s for comparison.

Not that it is terribly relevant, but I also have a factory supercharged Audi S4, so I'm clearly sold on the technology.

I have ever expectation that the TRD supercharger would be a great addition to the 100 series as well.

How many miles did your 100 have?

I would suggest to buy it. 135,000 miles is a nice low mileage and probably maintained well.

I have a 1999 with a supercharger installed at 48,xxx miles and now has 230,xxx - no issues. I had the supercharger unit rebuilt at 200,000 miles.

I would do it again if given the chance. It doesn't add that much power but when you are altitude and loaded for a trip - it helps a lot.

'98 requires premium regardless of SC.
Hmmm never knew that... does everyone else run premium? I tried it at one point and noticed no difference. Been running on regular for a looooong time....
