I vote for somewhere else besides Jemez; it's time to expand our horizon a bit. Where else can we go?

Pecos.

Not that my opinion matters, because I have to work. I can go wheel the mean streets around the Denver International Airport. Some of those toll roads are wicked! But I'm jonesin' to go explore the Pecos mountains more after our trip to Elk Mountain. When I've flown over, it looks like there's good snow...

I'll throw El Malpais or Mt. Taylor into the mix as well. There are a bunch of roads to explore around El Malpais and if their snowfall is anything significant, it would be very challenging. I really enjoyed the time we went with Jon and Ryan?. Was that 2 years ago?

Sounds like you folks are willing to spend 2 hours getting to a snow play area. I'll toss in the San Mateo Mountains southwest of Socorro to the mix. Or, maybe the Magdalena Mountains west of Socorro.

Is there a gate up Elk Mountain? Or Dalton Canyon?

If it's 2 hours from abq, I'd vote for 2 hours north. :)

Wouldn't mind checking the stuff up North and then have a raging party at your place afterward? :D

Any more thought on the date? Last meeting it was between the 6th and 7th. There was also another thread for some local wheeling on the 6th, so.... are some folks going to stick around here, or is this going to be two different runs,or one on Sat and another on Sun? I would prefer Sat going for a little jaunt up north. Explore the Pecos a bit!

Yeah, I maybe up for Saturday! I have to work on the 7th. Pecos sounds good I have always wanted to check that area out, scout out some camping areas.

Gates almost everywhere--lower Dalton is open, but that's just the canyon going to private. The road up out of dalton is gated. Elk Mtn road is gated just passed the dispersed camping area. Cow Creek is gated at the forest boundary unless the locals yanked the gate like last year. The road to Barrillas Peak through Lower Colonias is gated at Bull Creek.

There is Rowe Mesa, but I'm not sure how much snow. It's lower elevation, mostly PJ, but gets lots of drifts. Open country, too, so everyone could have a chance to make their own tracks. I could be challenging or it might not be, but I think we usually get snowed out of there and this has been a pretty good year. Some of it could be muddy depending on the weather the rest of the week.

Or the Borrego Mesa area, but that's farther north. I can get there in less than an hour in a GOV, so longer in a trail rig. It's not gated and I know the snow will be deep. It goes into the Borrego Fire from 2002. Right by village of Cordova.

Or back to the Jemez, maybe around Los Alamos?

'fraid i got me too big o list on the 80 to spend a day wheelin, gonna be wrenchin' instead, it's good for the soul... btwn cb install, cdl switch install, aux power distribution, hood and hatch struts, trans kickdown adjust, OME lift, diff breather refurb... 80 is gonna get some love and i'll play soft music and make sure there is plenty of beer.... wish me luck, maybe if i'm nice she'll be gentle... :D

I can't make this trip. I started installing a 4xInnovations internal roll cage in my runner and haven't finished it yet. However yesterday we got 6" of fresh powder up here in Los Alamos, so if you guys hit up the Jemez you will see a lot of snow. FYI

I took the little critter sledding today near the official snow play area, just a half mile past the Sandia ski resort. We've got a lot of snow up here! If you guys come up from Placitas, this would be a good place to do some serious sledding for the little critter.

David, where around Los Alamos did you have in mind?

Places to go

Ironic - but there are probably a dozen Paliza caliber and harder snow runs within 30 minutes of Salida.
Yet, there is very little 4x4 activity in the winter. Including me. I'd love to try some of these runs, but not by myself.
It seems everyone is into snow machines, snow shoeing and skiing. Like me. I just got back from skinning up and skiing back down what would be a serious challenge in a 4x4.
And no locked gates anywhere.

Just sayin'...
