So yesterday I went to install a new head unit since it was something I could do in the rain and noticed that the dreaded sunroof leak was in progress. Searched and got great tips for cleaning the drains with trimmer line. I'd recently put on some mud flaps and this problem reminded me of that install thread where someone had recommended cleaning out behind the black wheel well cover piece while you're at it. Too darn cold to mess with it then.
My advice is anyone with a sunroof leak should make sure to get in there and clean this out as well. This is where the drains drain to so even if your lines are clear you could still get a backup from it clogged down there. I was amazed at the amount of dirt, leaves, pine needles, etc. that came out of there.
Top photo shows the place you have to get into. Bottom is what came out of it on that side. Easy to get in there. 10 mm ratchet and a T30 screwdriver. Pull trim out a little and then pull the black thing back. Scrape out the mud with your fingers. Hose it out good. Sunroof drains like a pro again.
